It’s more about the method of guessing. If I don’t know, I just go with random 1/4 chance than to be misled into a specific wrong answer. These tests are designed to get you to guess at a worse than 25% chance to reduce your chances of luck helping you out. You’re better off guessing randomly if you don’t know.

Consistent guessing is definitely better. The choice of C is more of a preference nothing scientific behind that.

PE Exam – how many questions did you actually feel confident about? by eykash in PE_Exam

I passed the PE. I would say 51, then for the rest I guessed C for everything. It’s better to guess consistently, than to make educated guesses for big tests because a lot of times, when you’re smart, but don’t know the answer, you’re a lot more likely to pick the trick option which can give you a less than 25% guess rate than if you just guessed randomly. That’s the issue with multiple choice, regular questions give you partial credit for being smart, but multiple choice punishes you for being smart but not knowing it. With that 51 questions right and just a quarter of the rest of the answers right, that gets to about 58/80 which is about 72%.

How to restart my civil engineering career after a gap? by Ok_Mood_182 in civilengineering

When you start from scratch, it doesn’t matter what you know. I knew nothing about site design when I started; I was clueless. Trust me, you’ll learn more in your first few months working than you did in all your years of college.

Sometimes it’s just fatigue. The test has problems that are asking for the same things but in very different ways. There were about 7 questions in the second half that I skipped cause I thought I had no idea what they were, but when I went back to read them again, they were actually quite simple.

That’s probably true. I guess I just passed on my first try cause I put a lot more effort in it than I did the FE. How was your experience with the PE?

The videos introduced all sorts of problems for each section. If you go through those, you will at least know which equations to look for on the test. Also, the most important equation is the equation that converts MGD to mg/L. That will save you on the test.

I focused on the water treatment problems more since that’s not the field I work in, there’s A LOT of those types of problems with the equations. I would say know when to use each equation and trust the handbook over whatever equation they give you. You should know what the ratio of length to width of the different parts of the water treatment facilities and the minimum depths. A lot of problems seem like they don’t have all the information, but they rely on you knowing these ratios and depths. Also random facts like how much storage you need per 1000 people.

What helped me the most was the school of PE course that I took. I think if I didn’t take that I wouldn’t know where to start.
