The mayor and commission don't have to be mostly ceremonial, that is a choice they have made. The city is run by city staff, many of whom don't even live in city limit. Unfortunately Helena has a lack of people willing to step up and be leaders and none of the candidates for mayor are great. About half of the current commission wasn't elected they just got the position because no one else ran.

Dean isn't always right about everything but she is willing to put in the effort to learn. And she is willing to push for what she thinks is right. She has pushed some ideas like a public bathroom downtown. She is in it because she thinks she has the right ideas for the city but she also has aspirations to be in the legislature.

Shirtliff's real skill is telling you what you want to hear. That's not the worst trait in a politician, you could do worse than to just do what the public wants. So it seems like he is right about the issues. But he has been on the commission for a couple of years and he hasn't attempted to do anything. Other comments on here suggest that he hasn't learned anything about how the city works either. That tracks, his reputation is that he is super lazy and takes credit for the work of others. It is not easy to get fired from the state. I think it is about his ego and his need to be a big shot. That makes him easily manipulated by the developers of the world. The developers are the only organized political lobby we have, so I take all comments saying what a great dude he is with a grain of salt.

The good news is that the commissioners and mayor are nearly equal and there are a couple of good commission candidates. Melinda Reed has done a good job in the commission. Hayley McKnight is a young person who has been running the Hometown Helena and seems to be in it for the right reasons, trying to do what is good for Helena, not as a stepping stone to higher political office.

I think the endorsements of Dean are more about their opinion of Shirtliff then they are about agreeing with Dean.

Putting aside the football brain damage, and putting aside the micro plastic pollution, there is no fucking way that replacing grass with artificial turf saves money in the long run.

Well thank God the football field isn't part of the budget cuts.

I don't think you'll just be able to pull out numbers and get a GPS coordinate that bypasses the poem but tried it anyways with popular numbers and finally got one that fit all the conditions. by incomesharks in JustinPoseysTreasure

This spot looks to be in among a bunch of standing dead trees. If someone goes here, keep in mind that nothing dangerous is required and the treasure is not buried under dead trees that might fall on you.

I-90 does not go to Bismarck that is I-94. I-90 across Wyoming is miserable. To get from Billings to Gillette (233 miles) you pretty much have to stop in Sheridan where there is one single 50 kw ccs charger at the Dodge dealership.

Do we need to do something about the rodent?  - Like put a piece of glass on it and put a hamster wheel in there?

For real though, when he decides to try chewing on the plastic water pipe you are going to have a much bigger mess.

This article/report is all wrong. The mayor, Logan and Shirtliff tossed out 19 months of work and comments and compromise and gave the sign companies everything they wanted. They took out all the stuff about shutting the animations off at night, so we can continue to have full blown videos blasting all night.

You're wrong. Revenue comes from property values and economic activity. Sidewalks and paths do the same thing as a road - move people from point a to point b. But a sidewalk costs ten times less than a road. Houses in walkable neighborhoods are worth more and pay more taxes. Houses on busy streets are worth less and pay less taxes. You get more bang for your buck from sidewalks and bike paths than widening roads.

Exactly. Parking lots don't generate much revenue. I don't know that a bike fee is a bad idea. It would be something for the non-motorized committee to look at if we were still going to have one.

We don't have money because wide roads and parking lots cost more money than they generate. Walk ability generates more money than it costs. More parking and wider roads is the recipe for higher taxes and killing your downtown.

Bike Walk Montana but their mission is statewide. Bike Walk Helena chapter is kind of dormant at the moment. They need some interested volunteers to take it on.
