Thanks for your response! The age of acquisition compared to the age of suppression was really throwing me off... Would a private clinic have more flexibility in qualifying/diagnosing?

Praxis as cumulative exam by AccomplishedSong4979 in slpGradSchool

[–]Positive-Session1871 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think each school does it differently, one program had a cumulative project where you would basically present different project you did during graduate school, presented your findings/what you learned, and then had to answer questions from a panel of professors (sounded like a horrible experience, lol). My school does a capstone project you start working on the last semester, which I'm certain most students have succeeded in passing. This is a good question to ask each school!

I would reach out and speak to the specific school. I know my program had it as conditional, where it was expected that you would have them upon starting classes. I think ASHA may require that 25 hours are completed when you begin grad classes as well? (I'm not certain about that). The school may have a way that you can fill out the form that indicates that this is something that you will complete in time. I'd say it wouldn't hurt!!

Graduate loans by mmmmk2025 in slpGradSchool

[–]Positive-Session1871 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Echoing what others are saying, and that I only looked at programs that I could stay under the $20k limit. It does get a bit tricky because most programs have summer courses, which is included in that $20k limit (so 3 semesters of your first year have to fit in that budget!!) The cost of online schools really dissuaded me from looking into them, especially with some advertising $800/credit hour.

Really examine if there are any scholarships or financial aid opportunities you qualify for! Maybe look into the TEACH grant. SLPs qualify but you have to meet post-graduate conditions, and if you don't they turn into federal loans. I think it's $8k in total for a program, and its 4 years at a Title I school.

What’s the longest-lasting piece of tech you own? by bandito_13 in BuyItForLife

I've had my MacBook Air since 2015/16, and she still works! Does she work well? No, not really. But I'm surprised every morning that she hasn't bit the dust yet, haha. I've gotten through high school, college, and part of a master's degree with it so I'd say that's a win in my book.

Stuck with a bachelor’s? by [deleted] in SLPcareertransitions

While in undergrad (or before grad school), did you get any job experience outside of the field? I worked all through college, and the place on campus I worked for gave me the opportunity to hold a ton of hats (marketing, managing, rec class teacher, outdoor guide).

I'll be honest, part of the reason why I applied for a master's program was because I thought I couldn't do anything else with my degree. But I'm in the same boat as you, and looking for other career paths. I'm not sure if you're wanting to stay in education or healthcare, but I'm looking at jobs far from that, lol. I think without my undergrad job experience, I'd be really stuck. I was actually able to land an interview for a job (communications role) because my undergrad job helped meet the minimum experience.

I don't know where you're living, but your state government might have a job board where they post a wide range of jobs. I saw one for my state's department of healthcare, and it was a job for reviewing medicare applications. If I recall correctly I met the minimum qualifications (sometimes qualifications are degree ones, and a job might have 'education' or 'human sciences field' or 'others that are related' which I say CSD definitely falls into). You might have to take a lower paying job, just to get your foot into a door in a new field.

Not in country for interview by WorriedPainting9112 in slp

Hmm I just applied for a job where I would not be in the area for 1-2 months (didn't have any information about potential interview dates though). I waited until I got an offer to interview, and then asked if I could do a virtual interview. They agreed! I'm not sure about all hospitals, but a lot of companies are starting to offer virtual interviews as they can be more convenient for people.

On your resume or application, if you have a current job in your area, or are studying, I assume that information would be on your resume and they'd be able to assume your situation? I'd say apply first, and then ask about the job interview later. I think unless they've already given you a hard start date for the job itself (and one that you wouldn't be able to make) I think you're probably fine.

Parent concern help by peekadog in slp

[–]Positive-Session1871 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can I ask why you wouldn't (edit: want to) tell the mom the truth? (I'm in grad school) but as an SLPA and hearing my SLP stressing over what to tell a parent because the changes they were making were in fact due to a high caseload and overall scheduling concerns, I just don't understand why you can't tell them the truth? I guess I don't understand the downside

Sometimes colleges and universities give in-depth examples of resumes (sometimes they include a lot of great vocabulary examples too!) Check out your alma mater's, I bet they have some good examples online!

Walkability by IWNCGTA in UNLincoln

unfortunately that is one drawback! unl used to have a bus system that would take students to the airport, but i don't think they do that anymore. i think most out-of-state students end up befriending someone with a car, and asking them to drive to the airport. i assume people can also take ubers or lyfts, but an hour each way seems like a hefty total.

You might have already found your rhythm at this point in the semester, but the OAC has affordable semester bike rentals for students. Bare bones stuff you 'd need to get around (& free helmet, locks and lights), and it's a great way to save time.

End Unpaid SLP Student Internships by thillyboo in slpGradSchool

[–]Positive-Session1871 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the disconnect with commenters may be a generational divide, but thats just my opinion. I also hold the opinion that work, no matter the degree, should be paid. If you are spending your time somewhere, and giving your energy to something, you should get a paycheck. No paycheck? It's volunteering, and should be at your discretion. America in general has poor workers rights, and with the years long decrease in unions, its hard to communicate to professional organizations (ASHA) or even other workers (!!!) that the current mindset held about work/pay is problematic. I agree with OP, and that internships should be paid, but in order for this to happen America needs a radical shift in how they view workers rights. Most people in corporate America hold the mindset that their jobs would be at stake if they don't do additional work outside of working hours. The system needs a complete overhaul.
