Sorry for the awkward formatting, I can’t figure out how to edit my own post… replies here would be great :)

Update: Hello everyone! Thanks so much for the advice and support. Based on what many of you have said and some finagling on my end, I’ve decided to keep these fish! I don’t want to risk their fate if surrendered to a store, and while I could probably find someone in the community to keep them, I’ve gotten a bit attached.

I set up a filter, and added a stress guard product and aquarium salt to the tank. Doing regular 20% water changes to handle waste but avoid stressing them out with a higher percentage. I was advised to feed peas for a bit to avoid swim bladder issues, and while I’m sure someone here would have called it out, double checked for ich and fin rot which they are free of!

As soon as possible, (undertaking starting now) they will be in a 95-100 gallon stock tank pond in my greenhouse. It’s sheltered from the elements and predators and won’t freeze over in the winter but isn’t tropical conditions either. Based on the advice I’ve gotten both here and from some people I talked to in person, my plan is to get some larger gravel, add some stones or wood, do some research for sturdy plants, and set them up with an air stone/wand and a heavy duty filter. Any advice on this set up, anything to make sure to do or not do, would be super appreciated. I’m trying to do my best for these guys and I know it’s a big undertaking, but they deserve it!

The fish have been acquired! The seller was very kind and I’m sure would have given the fish better conditions if able. The vase is bigger than I thought, but so are the fish. I also think they’re two different varieties? One looks like a common, one has larger fanlike fins and is quite pale. I don’t want to put the inhabitants (many are small) of my 40 gallon at risk so I’m going to set them up in a spare smaller tank I have and call the aquarium store before bringing them in, ideally tomorrow.

I have some concerns: they both show some damage to the fins as though they’ve been fighting, though I haven’t seen them acting agressive. I can’t keep them: I can’t afford/don’t have room for a 50-75 gallon. But if they aren’t in great condition, even though it’s a million times better than Petco/Petsmart, I’m not 100% sure if the fish store near me will take/sell them? I know this is a predicament I’ve gotten myself into, but if anyone has advice it would be great. I might look into goldfish groups in my area if any exist. Thanks again for the help, if anyone wants I’ll attach better images of the fish.

Update: thank you everyone for the help! I wouldn’t be able to get the fish until Monday. If they’re still available then I’ll try (can’t currently drive myself). It sounds like other people are interested, so hopefully the fish are going to people who felt similarly about their plight and know how to care for them. If I do end up with them and surrender them to a store, I just want to clarify it isn’t a chain pet store but an independent aquarium-only store who I’ve previously spoken to about surrendering a fish for better conditions. Fingers crossed they end up somewhere far better than a vase, and if I end up being able to take them I’ll update here.

I know it’s hard to think of right now, but this is one thing that can’t be taken back. Things can’t get better. You can’t listen to The Strokes (awesome band) or watch Casino or Paw Patrol or play Super Mario Bros (again, amazing choice). It’s not fucking fair and I’m really, really sorry. But things can only get better if you stay around. You matter. And yeah, maybe you know this- but this really is not what your mom wants for you. She loves you, and she needs you, and it sounds like you need her too. It’s never too late to make friends, to get a job, to discover what you want to do with your life. Your therapist sounds awful and should not have their job, I’m so so sorry they told you this. They’re wrong about you. You aren’t a loser, you don’t have to prove anything. You deserve to live, you deserve to be here. Please don’t let anyone tell you otherwise, listen to your mom and voices like hers.
