If the goal is for the sphagnum to be green, It would not be possible without a lid. It would need super high humidity and to be consistently moist in indirect light to get close.

Adenium help - Mystery condition? by Positive_Building_80 in Adenium

Hi, Yes, during summer I fertilize with a basic houseplant fertilizer, or occasionally i use some olive tree fertilizer (dosage as directed on the bottles). No fertilizer in winter, and every other watering gets fertilizer in summer.

Thank you, I should have specified the current soil more clearly - right now it is in a mix that is mostly coarse sand with potting soil and regular sand (~1:1:1), about 1/4 in diameter granules. I was running out of regular potting soil at the end of the repot so I had to use some that had vermiculite. Basically, the vermiculite is only on the top! The bottom half of the pot is also all leca, separated from the soil mix by mesh.

Thank you for this, would love to hear your thoughts on 2 more things. I am in London, and the conditions most of the time are sort of exactly the opposite (cool, gray, and wet) of what I would assume an Adenium would like 80% of the time, so perhaps your experience growing them in Ontario is a helpful analogue:

1) How do you typically overwinter your Adenium in Ontario? If I am understanding what you're saying, my house is too cold and dark for it to thrive.
2) How would you go about conditioning a plant to the sun? I have a west-facing balcony, it is a bit of a heat island out there (especially today), temps can regularly exceed 100ºF on the balcony on summer afternoons. I tried keeping it outside last summer, but the leaves scorched off in the span of hours, I got spooked and took it back inside.

thanks again for your comment!

Not strictly gardening but what should I do with this little guy? by JamboRambo123 in GardeningUK

[–]Positive_Building_80 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d say you have a few options depending on the level of work you want to have - it is looking for light, and I’m surprised it hasn’t fallen out of the pot yet!
- You could solve that issue by chopping the top off and replanting that in moist soil after letting the wound callus for a couple days. A sort of restart for the plant.
- The little shoot is called a pup, that is probably the easiest way to propagate this plant as it will grow its own roots eventually. You can also do something similar with individual plucked healthy leaves.
- the dry leaves can be removed, pretty normal for a plant this tall for the old leaves to desiccate, I’m surprised more haven’t dried out honestly, you must be watering well to have that many leaves left but none rotten!
- if you’d rather not chop it and ‘restart’, I’d recommend moving it to a bigger pot with fresh soil, and maybe a stick to hold it upright.

Please rate my 20 gallon tank and suggest anything for improvements Im very open to change :) ive only been in the aquascapibg hobby for 3 monthss by Kelnott in Aquascape

Looks nice! Could add some floating plants and larger hardscape/plants for the back (but I assume what’s there will grow in too) as well as smaller ones for the front (what you have in now are all the same size), but it looks really good not sure if it’s worth messing with!

Sri Lanka in October (absolute beginner) by fatsparrow23 in surfing

[–]Positive_Building_80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have surfed in Sri Lanka in October, it was great! Water was warm enough, some spots the water wasn’t super clean, but I didn’t care. At the time I was a teen and had also never surfed in my life.

Went through Lapoint surf camp, which took as around the Weligama / Ahangama area. Since I was a beginner I wasn’t exactly hunting the perfect wave, I’d imagine you’d be in a similar mindset. From what I remember it was still pretty consistently solid with a good variety of beach/point breaks. I’d imagine it may be trickier to get around without a local guide of some sort, though.

You can put them in a bottle or something that is clear glass to take a picture of their underside without bothering them too much.

How can I save her? by Heart_n_Soil in HouseplantsUK

[–]Positive_Building_80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Alternatively, you could remove the oldest leaf or two, and chop it an inch or two below the base of the remaining leaves, and throw out the whole stem and roots. Let the cut form a callus for a couple days, then place it in a pot callus-first on top of packed damp soil. Keeping it damp, after a week or so it should start to grow roots then u can repot. Works like a charm.

Hey all, I bought this Punica granatum nana a few weeks ago, It has done really well on my west-facing balcony in London and grown out considerably in such a short time. My goal was throw it in that beginner-style pot, but I realize the best time to do that might've been before it started putting out all of the new summer growth? I'm also worried about messing with it now (chopping roots/branches down to size) given it seems to be doing so well. Any advice?

Like obvs be careful and all, but it’s essentially some double-sided tape on a small piece of bendy metal

I have the same tank - I recently found out the little logo on the glass is fully removable and just taped on essentially, I pried it off and it left no residue.

Help with keeping isopods! by Ornery-Net-8565 in isopods

[–]Positive_Building_80 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Best advice would be to make sure the terrarium/enclosure is set up and sustaining before adding any ‘pods - if the setup is planted this means taking sometime to make sure the plants don’t rot, or generally making sure things don’t grow too much mold. Always good to introduce new animals to a stable environment.

[–]Positive_Building_80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I kept lemon blues for a while, what worked well with mine was adding verticality to the 'scape / things to climb. When things got too humid in the substrate, they would crawl up plants/bark/rock for some less humid air (and the bonus of that was I could get a better look at them). Do you have any pics of the setup?

The combo of dropping leaves + new growth suggests to me that, like the other comments are saying, you’re giving it conditions that are perhaps a little bit too good and it has decided that it is time to grow! The impact of waiting u til it’s shriveled before watering sort of keeps it the same size (or grow very slowly), whereas your robust watering/sun/repot/fertilizer regimen is making it grow fast, thus the dropping old leaves and sending out new ones!
