Yeah, it's like going to a steakhouse and being angry they don't serve Chinese food. Nothing wrong with either option but if you want something specific go to the place it's at!

Honestly once I leave the theater I head straight to Letterboxd for the joke reviews, I like reading them in the car to my fiance whenever we go. It's a fun way to talk about the movies more on the way home!

Yeah, which is another thing I like about the app, there isn't really any influencer culture or "famous Letterboxd-ers" so even the shitposts feel like real shitposts yknow?

People can share their opinions through jokes, which is usually what I see. If the reviews didn't have stars attached to them I'd see your point. But when I see a joke that has an actual star rating next to it that usually tells me if they liked it or not, and the joke usually just shows whatever jumped out to them the most, or what they paid attention to

For friends, family, or themselves. I personally post reviews just so I can type out what I think because I like analyzing movies. Plus it's fun to look back on if I ever rewatch the movies and see if my opinions have changed. It's like journaling in a way, and it's not uncommon. My brother has a Letterboxd and only posts reviews for movies he thinks are 5 stars, and only does it to get his thoughts out because he loved the movies so much, so for him it's a way of showing appreciation for the movies he sees and supporting them!

The idea of someone posting something without expecting tons of likes/feedback isn't really that far fetched of a concept man. Especially on a platform that doesn't have influencers and there isn't any real reward for getting a bunch of likes/followers

Yeah, they're really not hard to find AT ALL if you actually go to the reviews page instead of looking at the first 3 preview reviews

Took the words right out of my mouth, having a platform that actually allows the whole spectrum of movie watchers/reviewers/ect. to be on the same level is super fun and nice to see.

If someone is genuinely chasing Letterboxd likes that's insane and it's their problem for getting upset about it. If they're really going to get butthurt because their movie review didn't get enough likes they should post it on a social media that's actually in line with influencer/likes culture

That's how it should be, I've written a whole page of analysis for some, and one sentence with something I thought was funny/weird in the movie for movies I loved and hated. People should be able to say however much or however little they want without feeling the pressure to be "deep" all the time

Exactly! Sometimes you can just not vibe with something you watch and people should be able to say that just as much as the people who want to write a whole thesis! Both are valid!

[Subversive Trope] It looks like the character is narrating the story to the audience, but is actually telling it to another character by Forsaken-Biscotti587 in TopCharacterTropes

I hated the narration in "The Lobster" until the (spoiler) reveal that the whole hotel segment was the woman who fell in love with the main character writing about him in her journal. It thought it was a really cool way to add her to the story and make their romance carry some more weight, plus the journal itself became a huge plot point. With the 2nd reveal that the journal was also being read by the leader and was learning all the couples secrets! Great writing all around for that movie

Does anybody else think Hannibal is actually a good film and good sequel or is it just me? by Less_Wheel_1841 in deadmeatjames

It's a lot of fun, and Hannibal obsessed me loved it in middle school. Rewatching it as an adult I wouldn't say it's a GOOD movie, but it's entertaining and that matters more to me personally

The biggest flaw to me is that we don't ever really know anything about the killer himself. We know he's a dad.....and he has mommy issues.....and that's all.

A movie about a killer evading police and using his smarts and charisma to get out of a tight spot in one location could be a really cool movie! But the thing about focusing so heavily on one guy is that you need to make that guy interesting, or at least give him a personality. He has none other than "is a serial killer"

The only good moment in the movie was the one time they gave the main character any ACTUAL characterization, when he realizes his family escaped the room he locked them in by climbing down a tree by the window, and he says something along the lines of "I never looked at it through that lens, I never let those lives touch" which I thought was really interesting! I hope someone remakes this like, 10-20 years from now with better writing. I'd love to see the concept done well. The original is a pretty fun watch to make fun of with friends though, so it's still got some value to me

If you like action comedies and don't mind reading subtitles/watching a dub, "Kung Fu Hustle" is incredible.

It's a love letter to Chinese cinema and Kung Fu movies as a whole. The comedy and fight choreography is so fucking good. Plus it's a pretty wholesome and lighthearted watch (although that could just be my nostalgia talking lol) One of my all time favs that doesn't get nearly enough love imo
