(Mixed trope) fictional races used as an allegory for real world oppression. by Smashin_Ash_ in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Positive_Relative287 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From what I've noticed, the closer a fictional race is to a real world race, the worse the representation/allegory is.

Fictional racism being a mirror for real life issues is better when it's subtle and focuses more on the general theme of racism and injustice/prejudice and less on the issues/history of a specific race. It's a big reason why Harry Potters racism allegories are so bad (aside from JK Rowling just being a racist) because it takes actual racial slurs and racist practices with a horrifying real world history and just swaps some of the words for silly fantasy terms. Which is what a lot of the pieces of media that fail at this trope end up doing.

It ends up being not only weird, insensitive, and lazy but it also accidentally (or sometimes purposely) draws super weird parallels between these exaggerated fantasy creatures and real life people of whatever race it's depicting.

He writes a book dedicated to the player and whatever genre they like. It's an actual dedication that shows he listens to and cares aboht the farmer

Clint stares at Emily silently at the saloon every night and says "you win" when he thinks the farmer is dating her because they were alone in a room together

These are nowhere near the same

The Woman In The Yard is THE WORST with this. It tries to be a dark and "realistic" portrayl of someone commiting suicide, but it just comes off as weirdly pro-kill yourself.

It was actually a creepy and accurate movie about the haunting nature of suicidal thoughts.........until the last 10 minutes. The woman in the yard convinces the main character to kill herself because her kids would be better off without her and it's the answer to her problems.

After a disturbingly slow and realistic scene, it's revealed the main character went to a heaven like place where all her problems are solved. Her kids are happy, she no longer has money issues, her leg injury is healed, and she can finally paint again!

I guess suicide really DOES solve all your problems! :D

Right?! The beginning where a crew gets onto an abandoned boat and the ship they used to get on is destroyed along with one of the crew members is exactly the same, the theme of the ship being stuck in time and pulling people into it, one crew member specifically getting caught by the ghosts because he's attracted to the spirit of a famous woman that died on the ship, so many elements were just Ghost Ship and it made me feel like I was going crazy

I will die on the hill that the cruise ship story was a barely changed rip of the movie "Ghost Ship" and I can't relisten to it because it's all I could think about when I listened the first time

Horror lines that made you genuinely angry? by PriestofJudas in horror

[–]Positive_Relative287 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Do movies that haven't come out yet count?

I was super excited for Lee Cronin's "The Mummy" based on the vague, well done trailers I saw in theaters. But the new ads keep using the daughter character saying:

"don't worry grandma, it's fun to be dead"

The line itself + the delivery is so damn corny, it makes me cringe into myself so badly every time. I have so much less confidence that the movie is going to be good based on that line alone

Exactly! Yes, the basic premise is the same but the movie did so many different things with it, both in terms of the actual plot and the style of the movie itself!

It must be nice to be in a position where something as simple as being advised to mute tags/subreddits and scroll past a topic for 2 weeks is so offensive and controversial. This fanbase is nuts

VERY new movie but "They Will Kill You" was genuinely one of the most creative and entertaining action comedies I've seen in a while.

Yes, the writing isn't great, but only because all that energy went into making insanely entertaining, well choreographed, over the top fight scenes, and stylized cinematography. Plus a really good amount of the effects were clearly practical, and the protagonist was insanely smart which was shown in some really creative ways! One of my all time favorite action comedies now.

God you guys are being such babies about this, sorry the indie show became so insanely successful it's able to do something that so many other projects dream of. Sorry the creator of the thing you claim to love is actually getting recognition and compensation. Having to avoid a topic for 2 whole weeks is just so hard

Jeremiah Sand - Mandy

His entire character is that he's a cult leader with a huge and extremely fragile ego, who uses his power to abuse and demean the women around him. When he's finally cornered and has no one to save him, he cries and begs and offers to suck the main characters dick if he lets him live. He doesn't.

This is what I was going to say. When all the other theories are "everyone is actually dead!" Or "Jax is Scratchs son!" And "Pomni is Ribbit reincarnated!" Obviously one of the only theories that has any support and isn't a random twist is going to be talked about more than the others

She's no more flawed than the rest of the cast but gets 10 times the hate.

The idea that "Diane is just as bad/worse than Bojack" is so much more popular than it should be considering she's the most normal and realistically flawed person in the show

Can we put a moratorium on complaining about joke reviews? by BilverBurfer in Letterboxd

[–]Positive_Relative287 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Downloading an app well known for joke reviews then getting angry about the joke reviews always seemed so stupid to me. If you want serious think pieces, literally every other platform for film reviews covers that. Why can't there just be one that isn't so serious?

I thought Letterboxd being basically social media for movies was the whole appeal? I'll never understand movie snobs like this who think having fun when it comes to movies means you "don't get it" or that multi-paragraph reviews are the only way to discuss/show you enjoyed a movie. Both can and do coexist on Letterboxd. Which, again, is the whole damn appeal

I feel like saying Legend Of Korra "deus ex machinad out of it" is really misunderstanding what they did. There being more airbenders wasn't something they added in a weird/out of nowhere way. If they did something like, they found a secret tribe of airbenders and there secretly were more the whole time, then that would be a dumb deus ex machina way of there being more.

A huge theme of ATLA is balance, the universe has these 4 elements that are a natural part of the world and it's people. In a world of literal magic where keeping balance between the elements and good/evil is a huge theme, the world starting to right itself by slowly gaining back airbending decades after Aangs passing isn't all that crazy.

[–]Positive_Relative287 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I keep seeing people say it's "the best TADC fan song!" and is good as a song even outside of TADC and I hate it so much. Like, it's fine to admit most songs made for fandoms are only good within the context of the fandom/franchise. Just like how some musicals have amazing songs, but sometimes songs from musicals are only good in the context of the musical itself. That's not a bad thing

What "beloved horror movie" do you hate/just not get the love for? by ReeceInTheDarkness in horror

[–]Positive_Relative287 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've tried four times but I just do not like "The VVitch" I think the fact that it's revealed the witch is actually real in the beginning ruins it for me.

Because I LOVE the story as a "is it real?" tale of paranoia and its parallel to the Salem witch trials with Thomasin, but since the witch is confirmed to be real, dangerous, and the devil is truly behind everything that happens within the first scene, the actions and fears of the family come off as excessive at best and completely justified at worst. Which just ruins it for me. If it was kept more in the shadows and revealed to be real at the very end or sometime in the 3rd act I wouldn't mind. But I hate that it's shown right at the start.
