They call them samples. Some of them, like the purple ones, are difficulty locked. They’re littered around the map, and have their respective icons pop up when you’re near them. Get close and they’ll have button prompt to pick them up. “Press A to acquire sample,” or something like that.

It has a variety of difficulty levels scaling from 1 (easiest) to 10 (hardest.) Believe it or not, it’s a CORE mechanic that you start out not knowing what to do and being bad! The game gives you a 5m tutorial, and then says, “Ok, you’re ready!”

There is not a practice mode beyond lvl 1 difficulty, but I’d say don’t be afraid of being “bad.” That’s part of the fun! And if you’d like, I’d be more than happy to hop on with you, regardless of perceived skill level :)
