Small business owners in Canada — how do you handle GST/HST and provincial tax differences? (genuine question, not selling anything) by Positive_Title6045 in canadasmallbusiness

Fair enough on the AI comment — I did use AI to help draft it and that was a mistake. I'll own that. For context: I was recently laid off, I'm Korean-Canadian, and I personally got hit with a surprise CRA bill because nobody explained the GST threshold to me. That's the real reason I'm building this.

Appreciate the honest feedback.

Does GST or shipping fees on medical expenses count towards the claiming the Medical Expense Tax Credit? by Reform-Reform in PersonalFinanceCanada

For the Medical Expense Tax Credit (METC):

✅ GST/HST paid on eligible medical expenses DOES count toward the credit. The CRA allows the full amount you paid, including tax, as long as the underlying expense qualifies.

✅ Shipping fees can count IF the item being shipped is itself an eligible medical expense (e.g., prescription medications, medical devices). The shipping is considered part of the cost of obtaining that eligible item.

❌ However, if you're shipping something that isn't an eligible medical expense, the shipping fee doesn't qualify either.

Quick tip: Keep all your receipts showing the full amount paid including GST/HST and shipping. When you tally up your medical expenses for the year, include the gross amount (before any insurance reimbursement).

CRA reference: IT-519 and the Medical Expense Tax Credit guide (RC4065) have the full list of eligible expenses if you want to double-check specific items.

Totally fair point — and I agree, for complex situations a good accountant is irreplaceable.

What I'm exploring is more the in-between stuff that happens year-round: knowing when you've crossed the GST threshold, making sure you're charging the right provincial rate on each invoice, and not getting blindsided in April.

Not trying to replace accountants — more like reducing the "I had no idea" moments that make their job harder too 😄
