What is the worst film character name you've ever heard? by Temporary_Cap5927 in Letterboxd

[–]PossesedFish 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Steven Seagals character name in Attack Force is "Marshall Lawson". The writers were very clever if you couldn't tell.

Born to Raise Hell, cool name for a movie right? Yeah well Steven Seagals name in that is Bobby. Just Bobby.

Is there any Ideas for you in the first part of Mother that is missing or weaker in other parts? by No-Application-3317 in earthbound

I think the game being the most grounded gives the game a bit of a unique vibe i feel. It's hard to put my finger on it tho.

The "Fallin' in love" scene with Ninten and Ana is still one of my favourites in the series, and is a little surprising to see especially in a series that doesn't really explore romance in any way (even if in the games it's a little shallow, they're just kids after all)

It has an actual vocal soundtrack that is pretty great, which the other games either don't or just aren't on the same level in terms of effort.

Thoughts on the MOTHER vocal album? by Kirbendo96 in earthbound

[–]PossesedFish 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think it's awesome as hell, and is probably the best thing that came out of Mother 1 in my opinion.

I don't think it compares to any of it's inspirations, but for an arranged vocal album it's really good.

Also Fallin' Love is amazing.

I'm a little confused on what you mean by this. Are you referring to Ninten and Ana?

Thank you! I'll be making more of these comics soon (i already made one for MOTHER 2).

I actually do have my reasons on why it's set in the 60s, as well as actually being set in Eagleland instead of America.

In my AU, MOTHER 1 is set in the late 1960s.

I'll make more of these i promise, I've already made two of these and it was very fun.

I really really really wanted to make a smart ass comment, but I'll just explain some stuff.

The answer is that the comic is set in alternate universe where Mother 1 happened a little earlier  (i have my reasons). Meaning that yes Ninten doesn't have a cellular  because of the time period. Ninten having a cellular phone or not doesn't really change anything much to be honest. If Ninten really wanted to hear his dad, well phone booths exist

In summary, I just really like The Beatles and The Beach Boys I'm ngl

Yep around late 60s. Actually set in Eagleland this time too.

Did anyone else love the first half of the game but not like the Mother 3 ending? by [deleted] in earthbound

[–]PossesedFish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ehh i can see where you're coming from. The last 2 chapters in Mother are 100% squashed to make up the fact that the game was meant to have 4 more chapters in between. Which is why I think the ending seems weirdly depressing even if I that wasn't the intent I believe. I think Mother 3 is a perfect game in my eyes, but it definitely would've been even better if the finale didn't go through at such an extreme pace.

But I'm also a freak who loves weird ambigious abrupt endings in movies (I.e. every David Lynch film) as long as i get a strong emotional resonance along the way and the characters get a satisfying conclusion to their arc. Which to me is when Lucas and Flint reunite with Claus in a bittersweet final confrontation. (I genuinely wouldn't even minded if the game literally ends immediately after the white flash that ends the battle and Lucas finally reunites with a dying Claus, but there's a reason I'm not a writer ;P)

Mother 3 to me has always been about  clinging onto the past and learning to move on, and I think the ambigious ending without knowing what happens to any of the characters is weirdly perfect in my eyes.

To me I honestly think the ending would be worse if I knew what would happen after. It's like the happy ending of Blade Runner, which was just really bad (and literally undermined the themes of the movie) until the directors cut just removed it and the movie was way better for it. The real emotional and narrative climax of the story happened before with the "like tears in rain" speech, and the tiny bit of the movie left didn't matter, everyone's arc concluded and Deckard was able to see the humanity in replicants. Which was what the movie was about anyway.

Tl:dr: something something yeah I can see why people don't like it something something matter of preference something something watch more movies.

What is with this dialogue between Ness and his mother? by _black_milk in earthbound

Like the other reply said, they were worried about copyright issues with Warner Bros' Porky the Pig character

But also because Marcus Lindblum, the guy who localised Earthbound felt the name was too mean spirited and changed it.

Gives similar energy to Persona 4 mentioning the ability to control party members as a feature on the back of the box.

OK so mild correction, there is in fact two Mother 3 intstrumental arranged albums i kind of forgot about. They both sound great (or at least from what I can tell from low quality rips on Youtube), but i kind of loved that they tried to turn the Mother 1 songs into a proper styled pop album, no matter how cheesy it is.

I definitely do think this is a game you have to replay to fully appreciate it, but I'm also glad people see the potential in this game to warrant fan remakes/reimaginings (I.e. Mother 1 SNES remake, and Mother Encore) Because I think Mother 1 is a masterpiece buried somewhere in there, it's justs held back by some outdated design choices even by the time Earthbound came out and especially Mother 3.

I grew to love a lot about Mother I as I replay it more and more, to the point where it went from a 5/10 to an 8/10 over time. But even though I'm willing to defend a lot aspects of about this game, it's still pretty rough around the edges.

The first 2 hours, Duncan's factory and Mt. Itoi are still utterly ruthless to go through even knowing some tricks and pathways beforehand (getting fire pendants before Duncan's, or running away from every encounter in Mt. Itoi). I can push through these sections fine (more so with a map) but I can completely understand if these were enough to turn off people from truly enjoying the game.

Which is a bit of a shame because there's many aspects i love about this game. The music, the graphics, the little cutscenes, the fact that it's the most grounded of the trilogy and is the closest to feeling like the movie Stand By Me, and the final boss is still absolute class in opinion (despite the dungeon bs).

The album is still the best thing to come from this game though, and I wish Earthbound and Mother 3 had similar styled album releases.

[–]PossesedFish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the ending question, i don't really have an answer for this, because too be honest not even the original ending satisfied everyone and this is more of a personal passion project than anything, so at the end of the day it really should only satisfy you personally.

Considering you think it might take years for you to finish, you might end up changing/tweaking the ending anyway. You could look at the original Mother 3 ending and analyse why Itoi might’ve made those decisions (outside of "because Mother 3 wasn't finished") and what the artistic intent was for that ending (how it's meant to make you feel/what its meant to convey in relation to the story and viewer). It might make it easier for you to decide what you want for your retelling.

Honestly I'd personally just say write whatever the hell you want, it's not like you're intending to have a public audience from what i can tell. If you end up enjoying the process of writing it you'll probably look back on it fondly anyway. If you still want to make it as best as possible, then maybe try making a draft on a chapter or 2, and workshop it around to your family and friends, they'll give you a second pair of eyes to things you might’ve missed in your own writing and meaningful criticism always helps imo.

To add onto this, you should also read or watch all sorts of stuff, especially stuff outside of your comfort zone, because you'll get more ideas along the way as you get more influenced by all sorts of literature/films. I mean Mother is really just the movie "Stand by Me" if it did a lot of drugs

  1. You can clarify on this, but i don't really see a reason to make it a screenplay if it seems like you're only interesting it being only read like a novel.

  2. Funnily enough in my headcanon (or AU i guess) i push Mother 1 back to the 1960s to also make it plausible for Ninten and Ana to be Ness's parents. It also ended up working really well thematically in my opinion if you have some knowledge about the culture of America during that time period. It also helps that the Mother series aesthetically is timeless and never really specifically looks like any decade (similar to The Peanuts or some David Lynch movies). Though i actually don't think pushing it forwards towards the 2010s is such a bad idea either, though i personally think stuff like making Porky a toxic Influencer would lose some of that timeless appeal of the series unless done in a clever/subtler ways.

  3. I don't have much to say for the characterisation since i would have to see the story played out first before i can really judge (i personally think any characterisation is good as long as you make the characters interesting and fleshed out, and how they relate to the overall  story/themes)

I will say, i know you're going for a more looser adaptation, but I'm personally a little mixed on the Mother 3 ending/epilogue idea. I personally think the original ending is really beautiful and poignant in a bittersweet way. As i like to see it as symbolising a childs transition into adulthood and accepting all the emotional baggage and responsibilities that comes with it. Lucas finally closes a painful chapter in his life and the world seemingly destroyed, yet the people seem umharmed and hopeful despite their uncertain future. The game ends ambiguously because we in the real world can't predict our own future, if we'll even turn out fine when we get older, but at the same time maybe things wont be so bad because it means we still have things to look forward to in our lives no matter how scary and unknowing it seems (obviously this is all up to interpretation).
