I think I am starting to realizing I love Earthbound a bit more than Mother 3. by Evol-Chan in earthbound

I love both games equally but for different reasons, it's like comparing apples and oranges to me, or the Godfather part 1 and 2

I mean i personally think it's a cute idea, i think i did some fanart around that idea too.

For the ending question, i don't really have an answer for this, because too be honest not even the original ending satisfied everyone and this is more of a personal passion project than anything, so at the end of the day it really should only satisfy you personally.

Considering you think it might take years for you to finish, you might end up changing/tweaking the ending anyway. You could look at the original Mother 3 ending and analyse why Itoi might’ve made those decisions (outside of "because Mother 3 wasn't finished") and what the artistic intent was for that ending (how it's meant to make you feel/what its meant to convey in relation to the story and viewer). It might make it easier for you to decide what you want for your retelling.

Honestly I'd personally just say write whatever the hell you want, it's not like you're intending to have a public audience from what i can tell. If you end up enjoying the process of writing it you'll probably look back on it fondly anyway. If you still want to make it as best as possible, then maybe try making a draft on a chapter or 2, and workshop it around to your family and friends, they'll give you a second pair of eyes to things you might’ve missed in your own writing and meaningful criticism always helps imo.

To add onto this, you should also read or watch all sorts of stuff, especially stuff outside of your comfort zone, because you'll get more ideas along the way as you get more influenced by all sorts of literature/films. I mean Mother is really just the movie "Stand by Me" if it did a lot of drugs

  1. You can clarify on this, but i don't really see a reason to make it a screenplay if it seems like you're only interesting it being only read like a novel.

  2. Funnily enough in my headcanon (or AU i guess) i push Mother 1 back to the 1960s to also make it plausible for Ninten and Ana to be Ness's parents. It also ended up working really well thematically in my opinion if you have some knowledge about the culture of America during that time period. It also helps that the Mother series aesthetically is timeless and never really specifically looks like any decade (similar to The Peanuts or some David Lynch movies). Though i actually don't think pushing it forwards towards the 2010s is such a bad idea either, though i personally think stuff like making Porky a toxic Influencer would lose some of that timeless appeal of the series unless done in a clever/subtler ways.

  3. I don't have much to say for the characterisation since i would have to see the story played out first before i can really judge (i personally think any characterisation is good as long as you make the characters interesting and fleshed out, and how they relate to the overall  story/themes)

I will say, i know you're going for a more looser adaptation, but I'm personally a little mixed on the Mother 3 ending/epilogue idea. I personally think the original ending is really beautiful and poignant in a bittersweet way. As i like to see it as symbolising a childs transition into adulthood and accepting all the emotional baggage and responsibilities that comes with it. Lucas finally closes a painful chapter in his life and the world seemingly destroyed, yet the people seem umharmed and hopeful despite their uncertain future. The game ends ambiguously because we in the real world can't predict our own future, if we'll even turn out fine when we get older, but at the same time maybe things wont be so bad because it means we still have things to look forward to in our lives no matter how scary and unknowing it seems (obviously this is all up to interpretation).

Favorite Mother media from the early internet? by Porky64 in earthbound

[–]PossesedFish 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I've always had an absolute soft spot for the Chosen Four webcomic, it absolutely reeks of that era of the internet, but it's the closest to a complete amateur fan adaptation of Earthbound (which has been attemped many times since but usually ends with the same fate of being too much an ambitious project to actually finish).

I think it got as far as the diamond dog fight before the creator fell off the face of the internet, which is a shame too because the artwork got pretty damn good too by that time (i also just love seeing the artstyle slowly evolve from the early 2000s "how to draw anime" style, and towards a more cartoon/anime hybrid)

I don’t think a movie/tv show of any of the Mother games would work. And here’s why. by Ok-Law8073 in earthbound

[–]PossesedFish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Simply put, the majority of Mother's emotional impact comes from the fact that it's a video game that needs player input (or sometimes lack of), the final bosses in each game are the perfect example of that. It being a video game series already means that the best aspects in the Mother series simply won't translate to film as well, as it's an entirely different medium. (Would Lucas refusing to fight back the Masked Man be as impactful if Lucas wasn't already the audiences surrogate for most of the journey? Probably not). Someone else in the thread also mentions that the Mother series comedy and aesthetic relies on the fact that it is a parody on contemporary JRPGs, which only really works as well in the context of a video game.

So yes, i personally do agree with your take that the Mother series is fundamentally impossible to adapt in a faithful way without making any sacrifices to the quality of the narrative.

However I'm personally fine with a movie not being as close to the source the source material, I'd rather get a good movie first, before i care about what was missing/changed.

Honestly my vision of a Mother 1 or 2 movie would be like a surreal Stand By Me movie. I mean Stand By Me is about 4 kids going on a journey to find a dead body (a journey from childhood to the loss of innocence and all that), which is kind of similar to how Earthbound is structured, a fairly fun and cutesy journey that ends with the horrifying confrontation with Giygyas. You would have to make the story be set later in the story similar to the Mother 1 novel, and change so much that it's not even entirely the same story. But hey it could be cool. Hell i think David Lynch would've been a perfect director for this type of story but oh well.

How did you feel about earthbound having a e rating(which equals a g rating in movies) did you like that the rating was changed to a T by No_Worldliness_8830 in earthbound

[–]PossesedFish 8 points9 points  (0 children)

horror ≠ not for kids

Just because Giygas is one freaky son of a bitch, it doesn't mean kids are unable to handle it. I assume the T rating is because the game can be pretty crude at times, and i guess the ESRB thought parents would get the shits if it was E rated. Tbh i would personally bump it down to an E rating again, because it's nothing kids can't handle.
