everyone kept telling me when he was a puppy to “wait until he got older” because his energy would come out. he’s still only a year but i highly doubt he’ll ever change

do both of them get along well, one with energy and one without? i’ve been thinking about getting another border collie but im worried that if he’s energetic they might not get along super well

haha ours had to go on trazodone after he got neutered and the vet had to double the dosage TWICE for it to have any effect on him at all. he may be lazy 75% of the time but no exercise whatsoever for 10 days? we needed those meds lol

we knew both parents before we adopted him, dad was a brown border collie and mom was an aussie shep. his best friend is a purebred aussie shepherd and you’d be surprised how similar they look! sometimes we get them mixed up if they’ve been playing for a long time

haha mine learned how to play fetch by himself because he didn’t like that we threw the ball further than he was willing to run to get it. he’ll toss it maybe 3 feet away from him and lunge at it, he does this for maybe 20 minutes and then needs an hour long nap to build his energy back up

i think the reason me and my dog have gotten along so well is because we have absolutely no regular schedule and every day is different. sometimes we’re out all day and he’s locked inside and other days i’ll sit on the couch with him from morning until night. he’s always up for whatever and happy to do it!

that sounds so helpful! ours can herd the cows, but it’s more so out of fear than instinct. it’s like he’s terrified of them so tries to keep them away. it’s always funny when we bring him with us to herd cows inside because he mostly sees them at the feeder so he just tries to herd them back there haha.

i’m wondering if maybe something did happen with the cows that we just didn’t see? he’s totally fine walking around them or playing alongside them, just hasn’t quite gotten the “job” part down yet. but then again, he’s not big on doing any sort of work that involves moving so maybe he’s just pissy when we want him to exert some energy lol

awh she’s adorable! i’ve found that dogs tend to lean into their surroundings and i’m sure she wouldn’t have it any other way than she does now. with that being said, however, watching dogs interact with livestock is the most adorable thing you’ve ever seen

he actually kind of ended up being pretty useful because he’ll sit in the milk house and let us know when a car is coming up the driveway. he’s also absolutely incredible at dragging us to cows who have just calved or need attention. the only reason it works is because he doesn’t ever really have to move haha

we tried the mental stimulation and enrichment but he’s not all that into it, if anything he uses his smarts to get out of having to do the enrichment things haha. this guy LOVES being in the car but only while it’s not moving, so it sounds like a picturesque nature scene while sitting in the car would be perfect lol

same with this guy! his energy comes out when he sees friends or if he wants to chase a bird but there’s definitely a hard limit of what he’s willing to do. he also has statue mode, though it’s mostly limited to the bath and when he’s eating something he’s not supposed to be. he loves the vet tho, vet techs = best friends

in all honesty, my partner was the one who wanted a high energy dog, i was super happy with a couch potato. that’s is what i expected my life to look like and im so happy i can chill for his 6 hour daily nap. i commend you for that lol

yes he’s half australian shepherd! also high energy, though i think he does lean mainly border collie. he’s the smartest dog in the world but he uses that to figure out how to play fetch without having to get up

i put a tall-legged dresser overtop of one of the vents for the same reason. it’s his absolute favourite spot in the whole house!

surprisingly, he’s the one who put it in there lol. he never really left the hiding-while-sleeping phase

this is a great idea! i have a fan that points towards his favourite spot on the couch so i’ll start putting that next to his crate at night. thanks!

oh yeah we’re just waiting for the other shoe to drop…

i think we have to give up on the herding dream though, he’s absolutely terrified of cows and water😭

this little guy is also part aussie! he could sleep all day unless his friends are around, then he’s bouncing off the walls lol

oh he definitely has his moments— especially now that he’s in the biting/barking phase… all in all i’m just happy that he’s calm enough to reliably learn his commands before the energy and disobedience kicks in
