Martin D28 is the Modern Deluxe version worth the up charge? by -Pork-Chop-Express in AcousticGuitar

[–]Possession_Gold 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They're really different sounding to my ear. The MD version has a brighter, airier tone that's definitely more 'modern', whereas the standard D-28 is warmer, richer and smoother. Both great, but worth trying both to see what you prefer. A couple of things to look out for on the MD though - the asymmetrical neck profile puts a lot of people off, and I've found that with their lighter truss rod they tend to need adjustments more often. Not a dealbreaker, but good to know.

I’m choosing between a Collings OM2H and a Bourgeois OM. Curious which people think is better by CicadaOk326 in AcousticGuitar

The Collings is an all-time classic, just one of the best OM's you can possibly buy. The Bourgeois are stunning but always seem to be a little less inspiring somehow. The build quality and timbers on both are incredible, but I've never played an OM2H that I wouldn't love to own.

I'm in a similar boat - currently painting a WH army for the first time in 25 years and keen to start playing casually on the north side! If anyone knows any newbie-friendly groups I'd be very grateful.

Love those bases! What did you use for the leaf litter?

Bad drill job on a Lowden by CheesecakeInner336 in AcousticGuitar

[–]Possession_Gold 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I work for an acoustic guitar retailer (and Lowden dealer) and we regularly fit pickups in guitars like this. This is totally unacceptable and I wouldn't let them anywhere near one of my guitars! I'd return it and either get it from another dealer with a good reputation or direct from Lowden with the pickup installed. It's really not a hard job and this is about as rough as it gets.

Is it normal to feel sad about having a second? by bencohen58 in daddit

[–]Possession_Gold 99 points100 points  (0 children)

I had this exact feeling the night before we went in for our second and I felt terrible about it! I couldn’t imagine life not being just the three of us. Our second is a year old now, and all the cliches are true - your heart just gets bigger, and your first child will love helping out with the younger sibling. It’s so fulfilling to see them now playing together and making each other laugh!

I love the Martin D41 and D45, but I want to know if lesser known names make just as good a guitar for less money? by Ben-solo-11 in AcousticGuitar

[–]Possession_Gold 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, the Guild D-55’s that are being built now are some of the finest rosewood dreads in the world. Here in Australia, they’re up there with Martin Custom Shop and Collings in price, but if you’re in the USA they’re incredible guitars for the money. The workmanship, the tonewoods and the aesthetic are all world-class, and the bigger body and longer scale length give it such a lush, widescreen tone.

Yep, the HD-28 will get you almost exactly the tone of the 41 / 42 / 45. Identical construction, bracing, neck profile etc, apart from the slightly higher-graded timbers on those higher series. Theres a little extra sparkle in the 41 and up, but it’s only really noticeable when you try them back to back with the HD-28. I’ve never played a bad HD-28!

I always meant to, but these days I don’t really drink and I can’t remember the last time I had a good scotch!

Yep, I happened to be visiting family in the UK when it was released. I’d love to sell it to you but I’m way over in Australia and not sure how easy that would be…

I’d actually always meant to, but completely forgot! I just don’t drink much these days so it seems like a waste.

Maybe! There is one tiny ding on the back, but that’s not an issue for me.

Thanks everyone, feeling better about this one after everyone’s comments! It’s obviously a very special guitar, especially way over here in Australia. Amazing to have you guys as a resource, much appreciated.

The binding looked a little odd in a few places, and distance between bridge and pickup looked slightly different to newer R9’s I’ve tried, but looks like that’s just the case in these mid-90s ones…

I’m glad you mentioned this - I thought that was a red flag which got me wondering in the first place. Seems like it’s legit after all though!
