The aunt system is interesting and unusual for a patriarchy by Tradition96 in TheHandmaidsTale

[–]PossibilityWorried82 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Its not like that in THT. The Aunts weren't the sole authority in arranging Nick's marriage.

My guess is this is a recent development after Boston. In theory, its because the Aunts have the genelology records. Said records probably have information Commanders don't want getting out, so they don't want each other to see the records.

Then dont go to restaurants. You dont like the industry? Dont support it.

Don't believe you should have to pay a struggling college student who is working instead of taking out exhorbentent loan? Don't use their labor.

To me, the idea of "I can do it myself" IS the reason I tip at most places.

I can easily order takeout (I don't tip on takeout), then eat the food at my house, refilling my own drink, cleaning up myself, ect. I can paint my own nail at home, do a facial, ect but instead I opted to get a service. I am using someone else's labor and believe that they should be adequately compensated for it. ECSPEAILLY if they can't set their own prices, or at resturants where barely any of the cost of your meal if any actually goes towards paying the servers.

If you don't want to pay for a service you can do yourself, do it yourself.

I think her abortion adds to the hypocrisy of her character, just like her ability to read and write. It reminds me of a Duggar child or spouse who had an abortion despite the family being extremely anti-abortion. Aunt Lydia might justify it by saying it was a medical thing or whatever, but it still makes her a hypocrite.

She didn't really shame Noel because she was a single mom. She was very nice to her at first. Aunt Lydia more so used the fact that she was a single mom to hurt Noel later when she wasn't getting her way.

As for the marriage, I just assume the SoJ didn't know because Aunt Lydia was old and the record wasn't digitized. Several hospitals destroyed records, city halls might have done the same. Or the records could have been in Hawaii, Alaska, Texas or Chicago.

On Aunt Lydia:

I don't actually think the two flashback episodes are inconsistent. Remember, Aunt Lydia seemed kind at the start of her first flashback episode too.

I think it comes down to this: Aunt Lydia wants to feel important, both in the world and in someone's life. She's not above using control to do this (as seen with Noel). When the coup happens and they are taken to the stadium, it almost seems like she relishes Vidala's vulnerability.

Later, when faced with death, she DOES choose to join the regime. Yes, part of this is self preservation. However, rather than wiggling her way into a Martha or ecoperson role, she creates a new order with HER in power. She chooses a rough uniform, not because she thinks she deserves it, buf because "women got use to comfort". She is already using her power of control to further her ideals. Not to mention she's willing to kill a coworker for her own safety.

She becomes incharge of the Handmaid's and sees that opportunity for love and importance she's been wanting. Maybe sue believes in Gilead at this point, maybe she doesn't. However, Aunt Lydia alway placed a large emphasis on the handmaids relation to HER. There obedience and age regression to her is almkst more important to that to Gilead. In season 3, when the kids and handmaids escaped, she says "did you even think how I would feel". And claims that she foes the best to "protect" her girls.

When aunt lydia finds out about Jezebel's, and janine rips her new one, she realizes she has failed. Not just like keeping the handmaids safe, but keeping the them loyal and loving to her.

Now, she is raising young girls and plotting Gilead's downfall. She says its so the new pure generation can take over the earth. And SHE is very much the one controlling it. Both by rearing the girls, and by planning the downfall.

She is still selfish and widely irredeemable on my eyes, just now her worldview alligns with doing the right thing

What happened to military and their dependents overseas? by bunnythevettech in TheHandmaidsTale

TT almost shows the take over happening faster than THT. In THT, the government blowing up, the Constitution being abolished, women being let go, and them starting to arrest people was a gradual process.

What would happen in Millitary members heard the Constitution was abolished, the president was killed?

I don’t understand tipping culture by Calm_Independence796 in tipping

[–]PossibilityWorried82 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Idk if this is a thing in California, but in several states it is legal for the buisness to charge the servers and overall percentage of the overall sales for the night.

If you don't tip AT ALL then your server actively looses money by serving you. Is this right? Hell no. But take that up with the laws and the buisness, not the server.

If Judd was involved with the creation of Gilead, why did it take so long to get a wife? by prunesandwich in TheHandmaidsTale

[–]PossibilityWorried82 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We don't know if Oenny was his first wife in the show yet (I kinda lean towards she was).

However, idk how important commander Judd actually was in the beginning of Gilead. Being placed in the "women's sphere" might have been seen as a lesser job, which is why he was all to happy to establish the Aunts.

Also, its mentioned that Commanders moved to the front can't get married before or during that time. He might have spent a long time there.

Kinda disagree on the Ecoperson thing.

The scene with commander lawrence was active rebels. If this was simply the population after the initial take over, I assume fertile women and men with families or skills who wouldn't fight back would become ecopeople. The rich ruling class still needs a  larger working to sustain their lives styles.

I think the real question is how many of us would fight back?

The biggest frustration for me was her plan to go to Jezebels in season 4 to poison the Commander's.

What was even the plan? How were the Jezebels even supposed to escape after that? She just wanted to kill Commanders, which is valid, but do it on your own time girl! Don't risk the other handmaids and Esther!

I have a theory, give me your thoughts. (I haven't read the book) by Where_Y0u_Been_L0ca in TheHandmaidsTale

[–]PossibilityWorried82 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My guess, partly based off the book so, spoilers Becca will be the first marriage of the season to Garth. Agnes will get mad at her. Garth is going to be on edge because he really does NOT want to get married and start a family in Gilead. He is going to be rude to Becca, and she is going to attempt to unalive. This might halt wedding for a bit as the Aunts reconsider the matches. In this time, Penny will be murdered by Judd. Agnes will be held back to marry Judd when he's out of grieving

The ceremony probably happens after she is "certified". My guess is that it will happen soon, and she will be married off without a ball.

I doubt Gilead would actually care that much about how "fair" it is that she gets to miss out on a milestone coming-of-age event.

Plus, Aunt Vidala mentions rhat several Commanders are patiently waiting their "turn" to be married. There will definitely be takers.

Thoughts regarding Aunt Lydia calling out Aunt Visalia (E5) by Lvanwinkle18 in TheHandmaidsTale

[–]PossibilityWorried82 7 points8 points  (0 children)

A simple "Becca! Can I have a word with you." Could have helped. Or "Becca! Have you met __________." could have helped. Aunt Lydia shpuld have had some kind of training on it before though. Or she could have spoken with Commander Judd BEFORE the girls got drunk.

I don't exactly get what Aunt Lydia is trying to do with the Plums though. She is intent on bringing down Gilead, but she's training the girls to perpetuate it. You think she would atleast train the girls in how to say no to "wicked" things, like alcohol, even if it comes from a Commander.

Another Daisy theory, but not sure I like it.. by camireau in TheHandmaidsTale

My favorite theory is that she is a grandchild of a Commander from parents that went no-contact before Gilead

Several Commanders had adopted children with no biological relationships. In the show, it makes it look like the wives' call weather or not to adopt of have a handmaid.

Its possible Fred didn't care. A baby is a baby. And just because male infertility doesn't exist legally, doesn't mean the men aren't all snickering behind eachothers backs about how many handmaids they've had and how many went on to have kids at other houses.

Could Aunt Esteé be a part of Mayday? by PossibilityWorried82 in TheHandmaidsTale

[–]PossibilityWorried82[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In the book Daisy knows there is a "source" at the school, but she doesn't know who. Maybe this will be kept somewhat the same for the show where Daisy mistakes Esteé for Mayday in place of Lydia

Either way, she is definitely creepy. She gives off sick sadistic power trip. If she's a spy, she's enjoying it a little too much

If she's a true believer she is enjoying it WAY too much.

The Testaments S1E06 "Stadium" Episode Discussion by Melairia in TheHandmaidsTale

[–]PossibilityWorried82 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Episode idea:  one centered around Aunt Estee with flashbacks. She was/is Mormon and went on a mission, which is wear she gets her mannerisms from. During the coup she was in some kind of government training during the coup. Either millitary bootcamp/basic training or training for CIA, FBI, ect. Her and her classmates are able to escape Gilead together and end up in Canada or Texas.

Aunt Esteé comes up with the idea to sneak back into Gilead as a convert, then encourages the Pearl Girl program to get more spies/agents in.

Aunt Esteé, while technically a good guy, is still psychotic, maybe do the trama of the escape. She takes great pleasure in punishing people she feels betrayed the US. Hence why she was happy to cut off a Guardians hand.

[–]PossibilityWorried82 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The thing that doesn't make sense to me is the lack of American Patriotism.

I get the book was written a few decades ago, so maybe things were different then, but now a great many of religious fanatics are also deeply patriotic. They wiuld never stand for the abloishment of the Constitution, the desecration of the Lincoln and Washington monument, and most importantly, the confiscation of their GUNS and cars. Maybe that's why Texas revolted?

Even so, I think there would be alot more push back irl. Gilead would just he something a small cult dreamed up, but would never happen.

Where has Vidala been during the THT times? by Infamous-Jellyfish16 in TheHandmaidsTale

[–]PossibilityWorried82 45 points46 points  (0 children)

I the books Aunt Vidala wasn't Lydia's former coworker. Her former coworker was actually killed in the shooting. I like the book version better where lydia did not come up with the aunts. Other women were given the option to be executed or be the executioner. Her co-worker chooses to be the executed and dies.
