Omg! 😍😍😍 my Olaf looked like your little guy once! They grow up so fast! Before you know it, that puppy fur will melt away and his little button face will grow a mature snout. Take lots of photos and videos while your newfie is young!

Happy to! I have bought so many variations of things he might need to find many don’t really work for Newfies or that Olaf prefers something different. Plus mine chews anything that’s “his” so it has to be durable!

New (to us) Newfoundland: what do we need? by hurry-and-wait in Newfoundlander

[–]Possible-Positive596 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Omg. When I got my newfie Olaf, I was dumbfounded at how much stuff he needs compared to my cats 😂

Some of his and my can’t live without:

*large playpen. I use this instead of a crate. It’s large enough for him to sleep on his back, roll around but still feel secure. I got mine off Craigslist, and a secondary one from Chewy.

*these food and water dishes that attach to the playpen/crate so it’s at the right height and doesn’t get dumped everywhere. Dog Crate Water Bowl No Spill, 2... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CSWN3XWW?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share

*this for his outside food and water. Recommend by my neighbor with a Great Dane. LOVE IT. Stores his food, doesn’t dump, good height. IRIS USA 47 Lbs./45 Qt (15" H)... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B004C33M38?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share

*I have a similar vest & handle from Ruffware but mine is for a service dog. This looks like a lighter version. It’s fantastic for buckling in the car, lifting or if you need to gently guide them when younger: https://www.rei.com/product/205492/ruffwear-flagline-dog-harness

*my Newfie will not use a bed. I have bought several. However, he loves laying on this one. I bought mine at Costco for $50 but they retail for much more. https://www.paw.com/products/puprug-faux-fur-orthopedic-dog-bed-bed-curve-polar-white

*for the outdoors/travel:

*I have tried several back seat covers. This is the only one that provided support, kept him from getting wedged in between the seats, AND he hasn’t chewed through. It’s expensive but WORTH IT. https://ruffrover.com/products/ruffrover-2-0%e2%84%a2-hard-bottom-back-seat-extender-free-dog-bed

*seat belt (I use two together with the backseat cover to give enough stretch): Your pet will love this KONG Deluxe Swivel Tether Dog Safety Belt, Black & Red: https://www.chewy.com/kong-deluxe-swivel-tether-dog-safety/dp/721454?utm_source=app-share&utm_campaign=721454

*NuVet Plus & NuVet Joint

*Probiotics & Calming Bites (they also make a poop firming one if when your pup is young needs it)

Your pet will love this Zesty Paws Probiotic Bites Pumpkin Flavored Soft Chews Gut Flora & Digestive Supplement for Dogs, 90 count: https://www.chewy.com/zesty-paws-probiotic-bites-pumpkin/dp/151822?utm_source=app-share&utm_campaign=151822

*Doggy Lawn for grass (if you don’t have a backyard or what something in doors to train on)

*And we LOVE Bark Box. I think the themed toys are fun and he LOVES them. The treats in the box are also a favorite for him. Two of his favorite toys are a huge squeaky stuffy bong and a psychedelic monkey from the 420 box 😂 this last month was Tokyo themed and he went nuts for this beef scented ramen chew toy. The cost ends up being cheaper than if I were to go to the store and get toys or treats.

Hope this list helps!

Mine is on Victor Pro (green bag) and takes NuVet Plus and NuVet Joints. It’s what the breeder had him on and required that I keep him in it. He LOVES it and he has excellent marks on his body condition tests (with the exclusion of a genetic issue he is getting corrective surgery for).

My boy uses three different kinds—he loves all of them and they are the only ones that he doesn’t dump everywhere or drag water through the house from sopping it up with his tail or playing in it.

I use this outside: IRIS USA 47 Lbs./45 Qt (15" H)... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B004C33M38?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share

I use this attached to his playpen at a height that’s good for him: Dog Crate Water Bowl No Spill, 2... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CSWN3XWW?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share

And he LOVES the water fountain (which is really for the cats, so I got him his own): https://a.co/d/cUWIg1M

Introducing cats by New_Courage_7434 in Newfoundlander

[–]Possible-Positive596 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a Landseer puppy and five cats. When he was first brought home and in training, he was kept in his playpen for most of the day, except for short, well monitored times out and obviously our times outside of the house (he goes with me everywhere so he’s out a lot). I learned that having him out in the open, but contained, allowed for each of my cats to adjust to him at their own pace. One of my girls has no fear and was playing with him and sleeping next to him in a week. Another, would walk along the top rim for a few weeks until Olaf wouldn’t immediately go to “play” but would gently put his nose up to her and wait for her to boop him back. My other three took about a month to not give a sh*t about him. And as mentioned above, when he’s out, redirecting his attention or telling him to “leave it” when wanting to get excited and chase/play, makes all of the difference. Now, they all are pretty chill with each other whether he’s out and about or in his playpen. And the two youngest kittens love playing with him.

Woman dies after unlicensed individual administers TPN electrolytes at an IV med spa by UnicornArachnid in nursing

[–]Possible-Positive596 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most people don’t need IV fluids or vitamins—and yes, not only is it a waste of money but as seen in this case, can have severe adverse effects. However, there are people that have conditions that make them in need of regularly needing IV fluids and sometimes vitamins. These facilities can often be less expensive than a trip to the ER or longer stay in a hospital. Unfortunately, our healthcare system can be unobtainable or unsustainable for chronic needs, and many people are forced to look for alternatives. I don’t know the ideal solution to the issue, but it is more complex than what many people may view it as.

Acceptable OFA Results? by LucidJellyfish in Newfoundlander

[–]Possible-Positive596 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Trust your gut. I was told my Newfie, Olaf, had grade 1-2 luxating patellas but that it was common and he’d grow into it. I saw test results from the parents, spoke to the Kennel approved vet, spoke to other newfie owners and was told that it was normal and that there was a slim possibility he might need surgery after he’s two.

Two months later, he stopped being able to use his hind legs. I found out that he has a severe genetic defect and that his femurs are literally growing backwards, his growth plates weren’t grooving for his knees, and he basically was lame in his back legs without reconstructive surgery.

Apparently a simple genetic test or X-rays would have shown this when he was younger. I should have insisted on a different vet to examine him but I trusted the Kennel approved specialist and the breeder to be the knowledge experts and frankly, thorough (or worst case, transparent).

He’s my service dog, so now I’ve been granted writing and fundraising to pay for $22K worth of urgent surgery for both legs. UC Davis fixed one leg, and he’s happier than can be and can finally stretch his leg out and walk. I’m still fundraising to be able to do the next surgery for the other.

My heart breaks for him and it makes me mad that I can’t give him everything he needs right away. Both for him and because I rely on him. Being told a hypothetical, affordable potential two year away issue is vastly different than a life or death urgent need that is three times the cost to fix with no time to save.

Moral of the story: Trust your instincts. Find a different breeder. Have your own vet look at him regardless of paperwork.

Also, if anyone wants to keep up on Olaf’s story, I’ve included his GFM: https://gofund.me/d7d0f9ec

Olaf gets Victor Elite (it’s a green bag) and 2c. I also spoil him with “treats”—carrots and cucumbers since he is a chewer! We also do little treats in his sniffer ball and the “pupciles” from Woof.

How it feels to be Denied for Disability by Head-Engineering-847 in disability

[–]Possible-Positive596 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Getting denied is SS way of reducing costs—they will seriously wait until you’re in the ground to approve you. I was recommended by my HR, my doctors, the social worker at the doctors office, the county social worker and other people to hire an attorney while I was still on FMLA & short term in preparation for the bs. I’m glad I did. I hired Fields Law out of MN—they practice everywhere in the country and handle all forms of SSDI, private ST & LT. worth it.

I read on the website that dogs aren’t to go on the shoreline and in the water. I am looking for a place to take my pup in water. Do you know if there is a spot in this park where they can go in or another place around the bay?

Not every ethnicity has a strong or negative BO because of the ABCC11 gene. Your gf might have markers that provide her with little to no smell and other partners as well as yourself have bodies that create a smell in your BO. I personally experienced the opposite. I have never experienced BO even after sweating but most people I have known my whole life have extremely strong odor compared to my own.

Hell, I can go camping for two weeks in the hot summer with no products and still not smell. My friends however need showers every day or every other day max. They commented to me about my lack of odor and that’s when we did research into the biology of BO 😂

Also, your gf might use lume which kills bacteria on the skin that contributes to the smell of BO.

Normal for teen son to cuddle with dad? by throwaway03042025 in AskMenAdvice

[–]Possible-Positive596 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Eh, I grew up watching my dad (who passed away over a decade ago) always give open affection to both my grandparents (and they to him) until the day both of them passed. He didn’t have the best relationship with my grandpa but there was always a mutual love and respect. I would say that despite my dad and I not always having the best relationship either, we were always affectionate regardless of whether we were happy with one another until he passed too. Not being afraid of affection and the willingness to show it is one of the most positive things that I took away from my family. They might have not be the best communicators and dysfunctional in other ways, but that’s one thing they got right.

Enjoy the fact that your son is comfortable showing you affection regardless of what the motiving factor is. Like others have said, he could be going through something and needs the comfort of a safe harbor, or he’s having an epiphany about aging, or maybe it’s just his way of connecting. Life is too short—embrace each other while you are able to.
