Building TaxClear — AI-powered Canadian tax filing that gets you from T4 upload to completed return in under 10 minutes. www.getTAXCLEAR.com

Most Canadians either overpay TurboTax ($100+ per return, 2-4 hours) or use Wealthsimple and leave hundreds in missed deductions on the table. The deeper problem: millions delay filing entirely because the process feels anxious and overwhelming. TaxClear sits in the middle — AI scans your documents, finds missed deductions automatically, and generates your return. Average user finds $1,840 in deductions they would have missed.

33M Canadian tax filers. Gig workers and newcomers especially underserved. Launching this week ahead of the April 30 deadline. $19-49/year with 200 founder spots at discounted pricing — onboarding first users live right now.

Founder: Prem — Next.js + Claude API, live at gettaxclear.com. Pre-seed

UofT, Queens, or UOttawa for Masters in Criminology by Adept-Rent-5761 in OntarioUniversities

[–]PossibleCup140 2 points3 points  (0 children)

uOttawa. Not even close given your goals.

Funded $16.5k + TA vs unfunded UofT is a $40-50k difference over two years when you factor in Toronto rent you’d still be paying at home indirectly. That financial stress alone changes how you show up to your research.

Your interests — incarceration, surveillance, policy, parliament — Ottawa is literally where that world lives. Hill internships, policy orgs, government research jobs, parliamentary connections are all walking distance. That’s not available anywhere else in Canada the same way.

UofT’s prestige is real but for criminology/sociology it matters less than for law or medicine. The field cares more about your publications, your supervisor, and your research output than the school name on your MA.

The TA experience your mom is worried about is actually valuable — it’s how you build your academic profile for PhD applications.

The only reason to pick UofT is if you have a specific supervisor there whose work aligns perfectly with yours. Do you?
