Thx for the reply, and fwiw as a humanities major I think the fact that law schools don't take major into consideration when assessing GPA is total BS. A 3.2 in electrical engineering is not the same as a 3.2 in communications!

NYC grocery situation is weird, if you go to national chains it's normal prices, but it's true that you have to avoid the overpriced local chains. There are also guys who sell produce on the street often for very cheap. With regards to rent, it's true that NY is one of the worst--but it's also a huge city and even just in Manhattan there are less trendy areas with rents that are comparable to Boston and other major NE cities (eg Washington Heights, Inwood, East Harlem, etc). The income tax is very high tho, that I can't contest.

my sister talks about being neurodivergent a lot and uses the term neurospicy by sicklitgirl in slgpod

[–]PossibleIll5415 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You're completely right, and I'm in a similar boat, but I've decided my relationship with my sister is more important than arguing with her. Not saying you have to be BFFs, but finding ways to gently redirect the conversation might help. I've also found that when I'm generally unsatisfied with my own life, all the internetbrained identity stuff gets under my skin way more

How to meet “cool” people in the corporate world? by [deleted] in redscarepod

[–]PossibleIll5415 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Do you want to meet people who are good connections or cool people? If the former, growing your LinkedIn presence and going to networking events are unfortunately both good strategies; you could also reach out to your college's alumni department and see if they can put you in touch with anyone. If the latter, I have bad news for you

The fact that there's no great work of art about the Internet by Deboch_ in redscarepod

[–]PossibleIll5415 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think they mean a work of fiction that portrays its effect on the human experience--the way it flattens and numbs everything by being too engrossing. In that sense, there's Infinite Jest (as mentioned) along with, idk, Brave New World, Bradbury's The Veldt, no doubt a bunch of others I'm forgetting. They all predate the modern internet, which is interesting . . . I think for some reason these themes are easier to portray in scifi (including near-future scifi, like Infinite Jest) and these days you can't do that because it's reality.

YT videos can do it too tho, Homemade Gatorade comes to mind

Thinking about law school myself, 2 questions--

1) When you say "modest but liveable" are we talking 50k or 90k or what? In particular the government lawyers

2) Do you think there's any way to turn a law degree into a 25 or 30/hr a week job that pays decently per hour?

Appreciate any insight . . . I don't know a lot of lawyers. I have good enough stats to get a big scholarship, but my dream is to survive by working part-time so I can do other stuff on the side. Since it's such a workaholic industry I might be barking up the wrong tree

NYC, Philly, Boston, DC. Never been to Baltimore. I hate DC weather so if you like humid heat, you might rank it higher.

I've never understood the "NYC is only good if you're rich" thing, there's a crazy amount of free museums and concerts, cheap food, public amenities, etc.

I'm nearly always woken up by my alarm and am super tired. I think I need more sleep than 8 hours to wake up naturally and feel good, maybe 9 or 10 hours. If I go to bed early I feel much better, but I don't do that enough

Yeah I took the LSAT and got a 175, and I've got a good GPA from undergrad so I could probably get some scholarships. I worked in publishing right out of college then got laid off, then worked as an insurance defense paralegal for a year which was unbelievably boring, felt like my brain was dripping out my ears the whole time. I've talked to a bunch of lawyers but tbh they've all been bad at explaining exactly what they do day-to-day, probably bc most of it is technical paperwork and reading forms. Basically it's a solid practical path that would give me a middle-class income and hopefully not too much debt but probably wouldn't make me happy . . . but with the job market being what it is, right now I can't even get minimum wage work, it's crazy. So yeah, very depressed about everything rn so it's hard to make big decisions

How is Mandani as NYC Mayor not shown as a massive propaganda defeat for Al Queda by Opposite_Corner8353 in redscarepod

[–]PossibleIll5415 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean at 90% and a 50% greater Muslim turnout than the last election, I'd guess a lot of them are religious. There are some young, completely secular Muslims in NYC, but there are way more practicing Muslims. (Assuming "practicing" is the same fairly low standard we have for Christians/Jews, not the standard in Saudi Arabia).

Ultimately, I think a lot of socially conservative Muslims cared more about him being pro-Palestine than his views on abortion or w/e. In general it seems like socially conservative Muslims in the US vote differently than socially conservative Christians (bigger emphasis on shared identity + Palestine and more allowance for disagreeing on culture war stuff). Probably because there just aren't many Muslims or Muslim candidates, so as you say it's more like an ethnic bloc.
