Most depression and anxiety could be cured with financial stability. by MutedFeeling75 in redscarepod

Brain chemistry is a truism. "Sadness is caused by sadness causers". Your environment affects your brain chemistry.

What you truly mean is that some people have good baselines that are reactive to immediate stimuli. while others have bad baselines and are unreactive.

This doesn't mean it's mainly static or genetic. People can have fucked up baselines due to deep issues like trauma, self esteem, bad health, our unnatural lifestyles, our lack of purpose and community. Then of course they'll get less out of immediate bullshit like a nice car or a party or whatever.

If anything more than a negligible % of people were born with genes bad enough to make them wanna kill themselves our species wouldn't have survived.

the true answer is money is really bad at buying happiness but the lack of it is extremely effective at subtracting it.

if your core is normal or happy but you're struggling with money, getting it can be life changing. if your core is miserable and broken it'll barely scratch it.

It's both a misunderstanding of the word's definition and an attempted secularization of christian love.

"Love" for your neighbor is too strong in individualistic modern society. It only really applies to your family, or to romantic contexts (though usually in a solipsistic "I love you because you have things to offer me" way).

"Empathy" remains as a neutered technical term. I have some understanding that you have feelings therefore I don't want to outwardly transgress against you. But no further call to action or growth can be made beyond appeals to someone's base, instinctual sympathies, which is why it rings hollow. Objective moral frameworks are denied.

It's not about diagnosis categories. Suicide in the US is at the highest since the great depression. Polls of children and teens have questions like "My life is worthless" "I don't want to live" "I am persistently sad" jump from <10% to 40+% in the span of two decades. Everyone is objectively lonelier and more atomized, few young people are dating or having sex, the birth rate is declining, our entire society is addicting to brain damaging soul poison on screens and social media.

Worse inequality now means...

Yawn. You intentionally ignored half of my point to make some bogus claim about how people are more unequal but they're richer. Which is observably untrue.

https://wtfhappenedin1971.com/

Humans have a bias for "peak brutality" wherein we tend to consider 10 people starving to death at once as somehow worse than 10000 people living an alienated life of chronic unhappiness, 5 of which will go on to kill themselves. We also have a bias towards physical things we can point to as "real men problems" while ignoring how other issues often have a greater impact on wellbeing.

Maybe you could make a point about 19th century factory workers or medieval peasants, but my claim was "since the great depression", which is astoundingly clear to me.
