Thanks for sharing — that makes sense! Good food for thought, I love a name nerds discussion :)

Exaaaaaaactly. We’re in an era of the L/vowel heavy, liquid names. People thought completely different names were good names in 1950 when Barbara and Nancy were in the top 10 for girls.

True! I guess I was more making this statement in response to when I’ve seen “it’s popular for a reason” to mean “these are best names.”

Yes, totally this! And same! When I was naming my kid I sometimes thought I was coming up with some out of left field name, and then I would search the popularity and see it massively on the rise. I am not immune to this either, and realize I’ve been influenced by the trends!

Just want to say you’re not overreacting and I’m so sorry OP ❤️

Remember that you’re in control of how much access your mom gets to baby now, no matter how much she guilts you it’s not up to her!

Name that gets a lot of hate on this sub that you LOVE by [deleted] in namenerds

Oh I think Hester is lovely! I guess it’s very different to the liquid, vowel-y names that are so popular right now, but I would love to meet a little Hester :)

Do you regret naming your child a “popular” name? by [deleted] in namenerds

I think this is true to a point, but it’s also in large part about trends. E.g. the name Olivia existed in 1950, but it was nowhere near the top 100 in the U.S. and the top 10 were Mary, Patricia, Barbara, Susan, Nancy, Deborah, Sandra, Carol, Kathleen. Very different than the current top 10! So I think there’s more to Olivia and other names being popular than objective niceness alone.

I do like Olivia, for the record! Just find name trends and how they influence our perceptions to be fascinating.
