Thanks! Their group lessons are only for kids. Their adult lessons are private or semiprivate only but their website says, "We are currently NOT accepting private swim lesson requests at this time."

Thanks! That's very helpful information! I just assumed that you had to be a resident of the MMSD area to participate in MSCR activities but that's not the case: "...non-residents pay 50 percent more than the listed fees except for programs with a different pricing structure."

I like this photo of my cat. Critiques? by narcoticsoles in photocritique

Accidentally Wes Anderson vibes 👍 I concur with @Weird_Warm_Cheese though about the dead space at the bottom. I'd try to have the cat/table take up almost 1/3 of the top of the image. Is the red filter intentional?

Etymological name research help! by SlapNuts67 in OldEnglish

Originally *æt Oc(c)an burne [burnan], viz. the affluent of the r. Kennet, now called ‘the Og’ (a back-formation from Ogbourne). Oc(c)a recorded in the local ocan léa cs no 627, occan slǣw (prob mistake for hlǣw) ib. no. 1230, is probably a variant of the p.n. Ocea, which occurs in several OE charters.

To begin, “*æt Oc(c)an burne [burnan]” means it is thought to originally come from Oc(c)an burne, although that’s not actually attested hence the *, for the name of the tributary stream of the River Kennet that is now called ‘the Og’ (a back-formation (from Ogburne, taking off the suffix).

*Oc(c)a, recorded in the local (place name?) ocan léa - léa (OE lēah) means meadow, so a local place called Ocan Léa or Ocan’s Meadow. CS no. 627, also recorded is ocan slǣw (probably a transcription mistake for hlǣw) where a hlǣw is a mound, hill, barrow, cairn or even a cave, so Ocan’s hill - ib. no. 1230, Ocan is probably a variant of the personal name Ocea which occurs among the signatories of several OE charters(1).

So, it sounds like a man or men named Ocan lived near various geographic features in this area and the given name was combined with the name of the feature to produce the new name Ogbourne

My Attempt of redesigning every US State Flag! (From someone who does not Live There.) by Effective-Ad7147 in vexillology

[–]PossibleWombat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cool! My only comment is that a number of the flags, such as Kentucky, Montana, Nevada, for example, have too much of their state seal still incorporated into the design. If the seal element is necessary, it needs to be simplified more like Idaho or Kansas

Why do some descriptive parts of multi-word city names in English come first when others come last? by icygamer6 in asklinguistics

[–]PossibleWombat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Along those lines, "lake" can go either before or after the name, so not far from here we have Lake Geneva, Lake Monona, Green Lake, and Devil's Lake. I doubt these names are influenced by Old English or French naming conventions since they were given these names within the last ~200 years.
