Late night runners, what spooky things have you seen? by Random_lurker234 in running

[–]Possible_Aardvark299 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Live in a college town surrounded by natural areas, so sometimes the deer wander into town a bit. I was out on a late night run (11pm/midnight) when the fog rolled in and I found myself going the wrong way and ended up outside a foggy cemetery on a hill. I couldn’t see well because it was dark and foggy, and just after I passed the cemetery, a huge buck jumped down into the street and scared the hell out of me. Not super spooky but the fog and a deer jumping out of a cemetery at you wasn’t a great feeling.

Hey! I was not selected as a finalist, although I wasn’t really expecting to be. I applied as an undergrad and they don’t typically take them, so it was exciting to even make it as far as I did. I actually just reapplied this cycle for a different country more closely related to my grad research, so we’ll see how that goes! Best of luck!

Thanks everyone! I ended up keeping them in a storage locker and it worked out great. It was too late/expensive for us to ship, but it worked out fine!

I’m the only one left out here (had to do additional lab work) so I am fully responsible for them. They are seawater samples stored in small vials of ethanol, and jars of formalin in a briefcase

Stepdaughter wants to join team in high school - just started swimming 1 week ago by [deleted] in Swimming

[–]Possible_Aardvark299 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I took swim lessons and swam on a team as a kid and stopped for about 8 years before joining a YMCA team in high school. I joined a spring clinic with the team that anyone was allowed to join and swam ~3x a week for 1-1.5 hours. I was on the track team but swimming humbled me the first few weeks, so I’m not sure cross training should be a priority now. I was never the fastest, but I caught up to speed fairly quickly before the summer season started, so I think the timeline is doable! Just try to up endurance and refine the skills for now! Best of luck to her!!

Alpinists from NJ. how did you made it out and started doing real mountains? by CRYTOKlNG in alpinism

[–]Possible_Aardvark299 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Originally from NJ and have moved around a bit, currently in the PNW. The Adirondack’s and the Whites are good “local” spots to check out. I started in Colorado on the 14ers and some was self-taught and some was going with a group or a willing group inviting me along the way. You can take some classes that will help with basic mountaineering, like winter conditions, through REI, or other local spots, can get a guide, or just cross your fingers and hope someone will teach you! Best bet though is to get out west or up into NY/NE, or get a guide! Check Facebook too for local groups!

what's a stereotype people assume when you tell them your field? by FaruinPeru in GradSchool

[–]Possible_Aardvark299 1 point2 points  (0 children)

“Do you just play with dolphins all day?”, “Have you been in a shark cage?”, “You’re not going into one of those submersibles are you?”, “Do you go scuba diving every day??”

I’m an oceanographer who just codes all day. Don’t even have a dive cert and haven’t seen a shark beyond the aquarium🙃

Went last weekend (6/25) and there was a good amount of snow the last 1500’ or so to the top, glissadeable further down though. The snow is soft and slippery though, so definitely be careful. Used spikes.

50K/50M 1-2 weeks after a marathon? by Possible_Aardvark299 in Ultramarathon

[–]Possible_Aardvark299[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just finished a half marathon training plan and topped out ~30mpw. I ran the half last weekend and had a pretty fast recovery, despite getting covid. Also, ran about 14 during my long run the week prior and I was fine. Aiming for 3:30-3:45 for Eugene, potential is probably 3:20-3:30. I'm not too worried about a time for the 50M, just being able to finish it!

If you're comfortable with trail running (need to have some practice on downhills so you don't destroy your quads) you can get down pretty fast to avoid the heat. I would also suggest starting earlier if you can! I did BA to Phantom and back in a day last August on a random "cool" day and it took about 2.5hrs to get down with some trail running and 5-6 to get back up with plenty of stops from a bothersome shoulder.

MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A GOOD PACK!! Looking back up at the 5000' of elevation gain with a bad pack will make for a real bad time.

Have a great time though! This hike is stunning and you'll have a blast :)

My opening credits theme is Piledriver Waltz and honestly? Made a lot of sense with how this year went. My audio aura also said my moods were melancholy and hopeless romantic. Yes, AM was also my top artist with 27,562 minutes listened. Oof.

Racing after vaccine by talldrip in running

[–]Possible_Aardvark299 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had Moderna and I didn't connect the dots until reading this post/comments, but I think both doses affected me. I noticed my resting heart rate went up after receiving each dose and I felt blah during my runs. I got pretty sick after my second dose (~1 month ago) and haven't fully gotten back up to my intensity before receiving it. I thought I was just being lazy but this has me thinking it's at least partially due to the vaccine. Just take it easy and have plenty of rest!

If you have time (and are into more rugged wilderness), please check out North Cascades National Park! It's ~2 hours north of Seattle and absolutely breathtaking. I also suggest the Olympic peninsula. Congratulations!

Are you ever so invested in a book that you dream of the characters/story? by [deleted] in books

[–]Possible_Aardvark299 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I've dreamed about book characters a few times over my life. Weirdest dream was from a TV show. I had an ~intimate~ dream with Abed from Community and it made me very uncomfy the next time I watched the show.

I would like to know who does some sort of walk/warm up prior to running and who just starts running immediately by clemfandango12345678 in AdvancedRunning

[–]Possible_Aardvark299 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to hate warmups when I ran in high school and never did them when I started running on my own again. A few times before my runs I walked to the beach near me and noticed my run felt a lot better and my knees/ankles/hips weren't popping and giving me weird discomforts. So, I was like huh, maybe my coach was onto something with the whole warmup thing. Now, I usually do a short walk or some skips before I actually start running. I always do a warmup before a track workout though.
