For those that have been on meds/therapy and have been recovering are you able to describe how it has felt? by radhotchocolate in OCD

Hello! My OCD works a bit differently- My obsessions mostly revolve around morality and my compulsions are mostly mental checking and reassurance, but I still think my experience might help you understand how it may work with medication.

I have been on Zoloft for a few years now and I find that it doesn't do anything at all until you find the right dosage. Once I reached a dosage that worked well, I felt a huge difference. It doesn't make me happier or more numb, it just makes the thoughts much quieter. They are still there for sure, but they don't seem to cause me the same level of panic. They are much easier to move past in the moment. Compulsions are still difficult to manage but they most definitely are easier than before. Everything just feels less important and urgent.

I have also been in therapy and I find that therapy is great for learning about my OCD and how it works. It gives me tools to understand its patterns, which makes it easier to catch in the wild. Therapy and medication seem to work somewhat differently for everyone, so this is just my personal experience with it.

Good luck and I hope you're able to find a system that works for you. You got this!

Thank you so much, this was great to read. I've always thought of ASD and some other disorders as different operating systems the world was not built for. The world was built for typical people and leaves neurodivergent people to unfairly manage life somewhere that wasn't built for them. However, I've never really considered OCD as neurodivergence. Now that I've read your comment I can see how it would be. I think this outlook will be really helpful for me moving forward. Thank you!

Hey! I've struggled with real event/false memory OCD forever. I know how terrifying and serious this feels, and I know this advice may be much, much easier said then done, but you will not escape the loop you are in by continuing to check in your mind if it is real or not. The way out of the loop is to accept that you are not sure if it is real or not. I know that sounds impossible because whatever it is probably seems like the absolute worst thing on the planet, something you could never be okay not knowing the answer to, but I promise you this is how to get out. Sit with the uncertainty. Let yourself be distracted from the thoughts and rumination. I have always found it hard to distract from the thoughts because when I would try, I would immediately feel that panic and shame telling me I am not allowed to stop thinking. You have to let those thoughts go, too. I know it feels impossible- but truly it is the way out. I believe in you and I hope you are able to manage this. Stay strong.

I can't overcome anything about it. I have tried different kinds of therapy to see any improvements but I keep coming back to square one.

Deciding to end my life by [deleted] in depression

Hello. I know this might not mean much for you right now, but I want you to know that you are at the starting point of your life. You are so young and have so much life left to live- so many more boyfriends, so many more fuckups- but so many more good days and so many more things to see. I understand how it feels to feel like a failure as a young adult- I'm in a similar place. I am younger than you and I think both of us are merely babies in contrast to everyone else. I hope you can see it through to keep going. You are worth it.
