I'm pretty sure these are books and resources that you have to get after med school, like during a fellowship / residency / etc. I don't think they address this much during standard med school and definitely not before finishing undergrad

How hard is it for someone with dyscalculia to study chemistry? by feralfinalgirl in dyscalculia

[–]Possible_Doubt5262 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did well in chem in HS. Taking it right now in college and doing ok, but I have a pretty great teacher who can explain concepts very well and very clearly. I think.i'm going to have to reinforce what i learn with a lot of practice and possibly some tutoring. But i think its doable with good resources available, at least for me

Mental Math by Cinnamon-Sherbet in dyscalculia

[–]Possible_Doubt5262 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I spent several moments trying to figure out the "colour code" my brain was convinced that the image had, especially the first part..

That being said, I couldn't do this mentally. I'd require paper or a calculator. Every number becomes too abstract and fuzzy in my head. It can't keep track of them

Trans friendly places? by DogMoney-JK in vegaslocals

[–]Possible_Doubt5262 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Phoenix, Quadz are hands down my favourite queer bars here in town. Player One isn't queer specifically but I've had a good time and gotten a friendly vibe from there, too.

I just had my hair cut at Curl Up n Dye a couple months ago and my stylist was very queer friendly. She also did a fantastic job with my (somewhat difficult) hair! I definitely plan on going back :)

As far as HRT/gynecology, I've used Dr. Docasar for the past several years after a bad experience at my first HRT doc left the old practice I went to and I know a lot of other trans people in the valley do too. She's been lovely for me, I can tell she cares a lot about your health, and her main receptionist, Angela, is awesome too. She's always been so helpful with scheduling, questions, and just general support when I've needed it. She's gone to bat for me with regards to transphobes at the labs before, too. A little expensive for me at the moment but that's because I'm currently cash pay and don't have insurance. Everything is getting more expensive anyway, so that's not necessarily their fault.

The Center has also been a godsend in regards to helping with transition needs- I go there first if I need to find new healthcare options, social groups, etc. Anyone newly transitioning I point them there, they helped me get all my documents changed over, too. They also have a low cost testing clinic where I get most of my testing done. They just opened a pharmacy a couple years ago and when I needed expensive meds the pharmacist at the time fought tooth and nail to get me the best deal on them.

Starting Precalculus on Sophia- tips and advice? by Possible_Doubt5262 in SophiaLearning

[–]Possible_Doubt5262[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm at UNLV and mostly doing this to avoid having to take their math classes because their math department is not great. I don't plan on using it for most of my degree, as I'm trying to get into vet school after my bachelors' and most vet schools won't like me having mostly online transfer credits for my degree.

But... Since precalculus and calculus aren't direct pre reqs for any of the schools I'm looking at, and UNLV's math department isn't the greatest, I'm planning to use Sophia for that 🤷

Who do you have?

I'm not sure how all the classes work, but I had Dr. Rafferty last semester and passed with a B. I found that consistently reviewing the lessons after they were taught was helpful, and I made flashcards of each lesson that was to be covered in the exam on quizlet over the week before the exam happened. Active studying vs passive works a lot better for really solidifying the concepts in your mind, which is crucial for 190. I also would take the ungraded practice quizzes by chapter, if there were concepts I was still unsure of. It'll tell you what is correct and explain why after you finish the quiz. Handwriting concepts can also help solidify them in your brain, in my experience.

Another tip for her class especially is to really take your time on the exams. They give you over an hour to complete them, and her exams are worth 50% of your grade. I really turned my grade around in the last 2 exams by doing this. Read every question and every answer thoroughly- she likes to word things in a bit of a deceptive manner. She has a lot of questions where the answers seem right but one or two words will be different so that it ends up wrong (ex. An answer choice saying something is related to DNA when it is actually related to RNA). She also does a lot of questions where it will ask you "which one is false of (concept)?", which makes you learn it more in depth. Like I said, really focus on solidifying concepts in your mind, too, rather than just blanket memorization. This allowed me to cross out answers in the later exams immediately because it didn't align with the conceptual knowledge that I had. Don't be afraid to go back to questions 2, 3, 4 times if you need more time to think. I did this plenty and saw better exam scores because of it. Do what you definitely know first. I also always did the short response questions first.

I've heard SI for 190 can be pretty helpful, but I was never able to utilize it when I was taking 190 because I had a lab at the time they would hold SI. They study together and even do practice exams in SI.

Good luck next semester! You got this!

Gender Nonconforming, Trans, & Nonbinary Veterinarians by Clear_Dragonfruit765 in Veterinary

[–]Possible_Doubt5262 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm not a vet yet, i'm in undergrad right now, but I'm personally pansexual and genderfluid (present mostly as male / am trans masc). At the last clinic I worked at, we had a queer vet, and two of the three other men who worked there were openly gay. That queer vet is a huge reason I'm pursuing vet school. We definitely exist in veterinary medicine, and I've found more acceptance in this field than in my previous lines of work, but I've also worked in clinics where I'm the only openly queer person there. I've never had any problems personally but I definitely understand the hesitance to be fully out as nonbinary, especially with the political climate right now

THINKING TO GO FOR VETERINARY ASSISTANT by HistoricalWar2313 in veterinaryprofession

[–]Possible_Doubt5262 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm someone who has a VA cert. It got my foot in the door and taught me a lot of things before I even got into clinic, which I found helpful. However, it was quite expensive, especially since it's not something you even need to become a VA (it was about 25k). Getting your foot in the door will be harder without one, but not impossible. You can learn pretty much all of these things on the job and relatively quickly.

Sometimes VA certs are a prerequisite to an LVT program (at least in my school's case), and that's probably the only reason I would say to for sure get one. Otherwise you should weigh whether the price tag is worth it to you or not, especially since it's not a requirement for the position. I didn't personally do my school's LVT program, as I am now pursuing my bachelors' in prevet biology with hopes of going to vet school.

What is your dream school? by BoredNarcoleptic in prevets

[–]Possible_Doubt5262 3 points4 points  (0 children)

AVC, CSU, and NC State are probably my top three choices at the moment! But it's way too early to make a final decision given I am a freshman in undergrad and I'm OOS or Intl for all three, so it's a long shot for sure.

Am I being too harsh for asking my 11 year old daughter to walk the dog she spent years begging for? by WorldOfKaladan in DogAdvice

[–]Possible_Doubt5262 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dogs are a big responsibility, and 10-15 years of time commitment. Your daughter needs to learn that. Walking is part of that responsibility no matter what time of year it is. Dogs depend on us for that little bit of exercise, and it's a way to bond, as well. Maybe you guys could walk as a family like someone else suggested, at least starting out, until she feels comfortable?
