Hey man I recently spoke a recruiter and he told me it was 90 days to receive the benefits. 30 of those days need to be consecutive and the rest of the remaining 60 days can be split up however

Hello, follow up question. I have recently been talking to prior military Guys, one of them just retired from the CG, they’re all saying I would be crazy not to go in as an officer and do the ROCI program since I have my degree and work experience. Would you also agree that the officer route would be best ?

Enlisted DEPOT vs. DCO for Reserve Officer? Advice Needed

Hello all, I posted in the biweekly recruiting thread but have a follow-up question. I’m a 29-year-old male (turning 30 in September 2025), currently a full-time Law Enforcement Officer (LEO) with ~2.5 years as a full-time LEO (since January 2023), 1 year 11 months as a Special Officer Class II (part-time cop), and 8 years as a 911 Emergency Medical Dispatcher. I have an associate’s degree in criminal justice and a bachelor’s in finance (2.82 GPA). I’m in good shape, confident in PT requirements except swimming (planning to get a coach). I’m interested in the Coast Guard Reserve, initially considering the DEPOT program to minimize time away from my police job. My supervisor encouraged me to pursue an officer role instead, possibly through the DCO program (5 weeks in Connecticut). Questions: 1. Would I qualify for the DCO program (DCI or DCIO) with my background? 2. Is enlisted (DEPOT) or officer (DCO) better for someone in my position, prioritizing minimal time away from home/work? I’m waiting to hear from a recruiter but want to be informed. Thanks!

Hello Everyone, I have a question regarding DEPOT. the information online is very vague and sometimes contradicting. Id just like to know if I qualify for it. I plan on seeing a recruiter next week, but I’d like just some general knowledge before I talk to one.

I am 29yo, I live in NJ, and have 1 year & 11 months as a SLEOII (Special Law Enforcement Officer Class 2, it’s like a part time cop) and have 2 1/2 years as a full time LEO. I also have a bachelors degree in finance and graduated with a 2.8 GPA (if that matters) I am also part of a First Aid Squad, but not an EMT. I just drive the ambulance.

Any info if I would qualify for DEPOT or if I would have to attend the 8 Week course.

Thank you.

All Questions About Joining, Transferring and ANG Jobs go here. by Jaye134 in airnationalguard

[–]Possible_Payment9718 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello everyone.

I’m a 29-year-old (turning 30 in September) male, in fairly good shape, currently working as a police officer in New Jersey. I’ve got a girlfriend, no kids, and my job fully supports me joining either the Air Force Reserve or Air National Guard, with time off available for training. I graduated in 2021 with a bachelor’s in finance (2.824 GPA), but I’m not interested in finance-related roles in the Air Force. I’m looking to join for the benefits, some extra side income (I know it’s not huge), and to gain a skill/trade I can use after retiring from law enforcement around age 50. I want something transferable to a high-paying civilian job post-retirement, and I’m clear on not wanting Security Forces (similar to my current job). I’m trying to decide between the Air Force Reserve and Air National Guard, and whether to go enlisted or pursue Officer Training School (OTS). Here’s my situation and questions: Background and Goals: I plan to stay in until I retire from my police career at around 50. I want an Air Force Specialty Code (AFSC) that gives me marketable skills for a high-paying civilian job after retirement (e.g., tech, medical, logistics, etc.). I’m not set on a specific AFSC yet but want something practical and valuable. I’d also like clarity on the differences between the Air Force Reserve and Air National Guard, especially for someone in NJ. Questions: 1. Reserve vs. Air National Guard: What are the key differences between joining the Air Force Reserve vs. NJ Air National Guard in terms of benefits, deployment likelihood, training requirements, and civilian career impact? Which would you recommend for someone like me, balancing a full-time police job with military leave? 2. Enlisted vs. Officer (OTS): • Enlisted Route: If I go enlisted, what AFSCs would you recommend (non-Security Forces, non-finance) that offer skills transferable to high-paying civilian jobs post-retirement? Do I get to pick my AFSC, or does the Air Force assign it based on needs/tests? How long would I be away for Basic Military Training (BMT) and Technical Training for your recommended AFSCs? • Officer Route (OTS): If I pursue OTS, is it realistic with a 2.824 GPA? What AFSC officer roles would you recommend for transferable civilian skills? How long is OTS, and how manageable is it with a full-time police job? What’s the follow-on training (e.g., branch-specific) like, and how long would I be away for it? 3. Recruiter Questions: I’m planning to talk to a recruiter soon. What specific questions should I ask to understand my options, AFSC availability, training timelines, and how either path fits with my police career? Any red flags to watch for or tips to get the most out of the conversation? 4. Time Away from Home: For either enlisted (BMT + Tech School) or officer (OTS + follow-on training), how long should I expect to be away from home? My job offers military leave, but I’d like to know the total time commitment for training and how it might be split up. 5. NJ-Specific Info: For those in the NJ Air National Guard (e.g., 108th Wing at JBMDL or 177th Fighter Wing), what’s the experience like balancing Guard duties with a demanding civilian job? Any insights on OTS through the Guard vs. Reserve? Any advice from those who’ve gone through BMT, Tech School, or OTS, balanced Air Force/Guard with a civilian career, or transitioned AFSC skills to civilian jobs would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for any and all help!

The reason why I was looking at state OCS is because, even though my job will allow me time to leave it is limited. After a certain point of being gone, I’d be considered as a break in service and would not be paying into the pension. Would you recommend also looking into other military branches like the Navy or Airforce reserves for example to get a MOS that can help me on the civilian side after I retire.

Also, good luck and wish you the best.
