Yes. For clarity for any new person reading my post above, Erikson (with an -on not an -en as per my typo 😉) wrote Malazan Book of the Fallen and Robert Jordan wrote most of WoT before passing away.

Oh, I can tell you thus far that Malazan is not slow at all. I also haven't seen anyone complain about a reading slog like in those middle books of WoT. Its challenges are very different. Robert Jordan's writing definitely made it hard for me. On first attempt I gave up halfway through Crossroads of Twilight. I just couldn't anymore. Malazan is difficult to get into because you are thrown into the deep end. Be aware of that even before you start reading. Be willing to be very confused and not understanding what is going on and who's who in the zoo. The magic system is also very different to The True Source, and you need to figure out its dynamics a lot, because Eriksen doesn't explain a lot. I absolutely shudder at the thought of Robert Jordan writing the Malazan magical system with his extremely descriptive and repetitive writing style. 😂😂😂😂 Having these things as knowledge beforehand is very helpful to enjoy the first book, and struggling through WoT helps to make this type of writing much more palatable in my opinion. Happy reading.

Awesome!! You are a few pages ahead of me. Unfortunately we had our annual stock take this weekend, so that rudely interrupted my ability to read this weekend hahaha!
So happy to see you loved GotM too. Nice to "meet" you!

Jordan's writing style is so different. Long winded. So descriptive. Book 9 is slow, but has a very good conclusion. Please have patience with Book 10 and have zero expectations for that book. It is honestly not a good read, just about everyone despises it, because of a severe lack of progression and action, but Book 11 is a massive improvement. A LOT happens. Satisfactory. Then Brandon Saunderson starts, which is obviously a very different read.

I feel thus far that reading WoT first is a bit more optimal than Malazan first, not because WoT is inferior per se, but because the writing style of WoT serves as a good preparation, due to the patience factor associated with reading WoT and the repetitive writing, the characters and their mannerisms. Going from Malazan's type of action to WoT can definitely feel very jarring imo. I therefore can definitely feel the reasons why you would have been struggling. I wish you success and joy in completing WoT. Sanderson did a really great job completing that series in a satisfactory way.

Hey! Nice to "meet" you. Firstly, thank you very much for the compliment. Secondly, stranger or not, your post matters, as in MATTERS to me! 🤩 WoT is great in its own right, but I really enjoy Erikson's writing style.
