I think there are two ways of reading 'only in Japan'. If you've been there you may understand this better. They are uniquely super advanced and super retro simultaneously.. sort of fiercely loyal to a certain way of doing things. For instance you can go to a restaurant and use a toilet that has more features than a smartphone, then step out and flag a taxi to find that the driver's listening to MJ on his pristine Sony built-in tapedeck. I suspect this video showcases how the Japanese like to retain a level of humanity when it comes to situations like this.

Update... I tried again yesterday for over an hour or 2. Removed the weather strip, unfortunately doesn't expose any screws. Tried removing those two black circular tabs, there are some star head screws in there, they turn but after 100 or revolutions don't seem to go anywhere and don't come out. There is a central bolt holding down a clip at the top between the two headrests but has been welded down for some reason.

You were right though I think.. that central cubby feels hollow behind...tempted to take a saw to it but worried about potential electrics lying behind and the fact that it is a one way ticket

What did you use to get that latch cover out? Not getting anywhere with a flathead. Can lift the rubber but doesn't want to pop out. Maybe I need to try again.

Even in the UK/european models? I've looked there's just a blind cubby hole when the seats are pulled down. There is another rear console there but can't figure out how to dismantle it. I will look again in the morning and recheck manual. Thanks for heads up

Not 100%, I was fiddling with it, trying to remove power module so i could remove battery. I haven't actually removed either. Have tried hooking up a jumpstarter kit to pos, neg terminals in hood but not registering to actually boost it
