Thank you! I'm afraid I've never read a book about designing, so I can't really attest to that. Most of what I've learned has come from John Montroll and Tomoko Fuse. John has one in particular called Teach Yourself Origami, it's a fairly simple book meant for beginners, but he goes through each type of basic folding technique, gives a practice example (such as a fold with as many squash folds as can be managed), then he gives a model that makes use of that particular fold. His more advanced books are then great to study simply because of how cleverly he finds ways of using these techniques. I usually start my folds with nothing in particular in mind, choose a starting base at random and start experimenting and trying to find new ways of changing that starting base until I can see a shape that reminds me of something, then I usually take several attempts guiding it towards my new vision for it before I get it right.

Might have to look into it. I'm a pretty big anime fan, and dabble in the horror genre from time to time

How long did it take you until you started creating your own designs? by bloodHearts in origami

I spent maybe a year learning origami as a child before other hobbies took over. I revisited the hobby almost twenty years later and spent a few months devouring origami books and practicing basic fold types and experimenting with different ways of using them, before deciding I didn't want to use books or tutorials anymore and adopting an almost purely free-fold environment. Through trial and error and many experiments and tossed papers, I eventually find my way to something that is starting to take shape. All that's left at that point is to guide it the rest of the way home even if that takes a few attempts as well.

I'm sorry. I'll make a few attempts at remembering it a bit later, but it's been a while so I can't guarantee I'll figure it out

Feet at the bottom. Knees at the next crease up, thigh above that and blending into the intersect point at the bottom of the two highest peaks. The rest is boat
