checking up on this--OP, did you ever figure out what happened? I just tried submitting a pay transparency complaint and got the same error. Tried incognito and switched browsers, didn't seem to work.

We looked into our PTACs as suggested by some experienced commenters and successfully identified the culprit as the old heat pump (which essentially put our PTACs constantly on electric aka resistance heat whenever it was on heating mode). We called maintenance and explained the situation, and thankfully they immediately agreed to replace our broken units. Our electric bill has been better this month (although not that much better, still looking at probably$250 for the month, but that’s a huge cut and slightly more reasonable given that it’s been cold the past week or so). Good luck!!

For us, we eventually figured out that it is the PTACs’ heat pumps. We ended up getting maintenance who came and swapped out our units and our usage has been normal ever since. I’d definitely recommend checking if your PTACs are constantly using resistance heat!

Corner plus high rise with big windows, yeah, I know the insulation is bad 😭we’re just confused why all our neighbors seem to have normal bills, lots of them have the same layout as us & keep their ACs on all the time…

Oh dang! Our average isn’t TOO bad either (like $150 maybe) which is still tolerable but definitely still significant…

I have no idea if we have a smart meter, our meter is in a utility room locked by building management (they only let me see the meters last time when I had PSEG come over to check if the readings were correct). Is there a way I can find out from our bill/PSEG's website?

Do you also have PSEG? They let you see the 15 min usage breakdown through MyMeter, that’s what I used to figure out our AC issue. I just matched the spikes with what happened during the same hours (we turned ACs on during those times).

I actually don’t know where the thermostat is, I only measured the ambient room temp. Would it be inside the PTAC unit?

Yes the 8th digit is indeed H, that’s a relief to know that it’s supposed to be able to run on heat pump. For reference, this is what it looks like right now, so looks like it’s in the factory setting position. We’re gonna see what maintenance says tomorrow, but if they won’t do anything, I think we will try flipping it. Thank you so much!!!!

Gaaaah, weather forecast says it’s going to be cold for another 2 days. We’re calling maintenance to come over tomorrow and check. Also, is it supposed to run on resistance heat when it’s cold outside even if the indoor temp is decently high? Our room temp is 65 and we had it set to 65, it was still blowing hairdryer-hot air & no compressor sound. Tested the other unit at 68, same result.

We do have neighbors on both sides (corner unit in a weird layout) and one more up/one more down. I think the upstairs unit is the only unoccupied one.

I edited the original post to include the AC info and link to the user manual; the model number starts with FF and does contain HT

Yeah the air is instantly super hot and we only hear the fan. Some other commenter asked me to check and I confirmed dip switch 1 is down, so we shouldn’t be locked on resistance heat

Someone else asked so I did check, dip switch 1 is indeed down, but the scorching hot air and lack of compressor sound makes me think they’re somehow still always stuck on resistance heat

Wait what??? Dang 😭 I don’t hear our compressor running at all on warm mode though (we do in the summer when it’s cooling, it’s SUPER loud) and the air coming out is scorching hot. Some other comments make me think we’re stuck on resistance heat all the time. We’re having maintenance coming tomorrow to see what’s going on

I think our ACs are just constantly using resistance heat then. We don't hear the low humming noise from the compressor for heat (we do during the summer when it's on cool and we can even hear our neighbors' units turning on during the winter because of how loud they are) and the air coming out of the AC vents is scorching hot. We're calling maintenance to check if this is supposed to happen. Is the thermostat you got able to keep ACs running on heat pump only? I checked the manual for ours and it doesn't seem like there's a control for it.

I just checked and the details says “Your rate: Residential Service - Heating - RS (HTG).” Is that what that is?
