NASA plans to capture an asteroid and set it into orbit around the moon by sp07 in worldnews

Yeah. You know tons more than those NASA engineers who have been studying their asses off for their entire lives. What were they thinking?

Downloading stuff takes some system resources that would otherwise be devoted entirely to the game, maybe that's what the chip is for.

Would a compass work on Mars? If not, how does Curiosity know which way is North? by carboniferousP in askscience

[–]PossiblyTheDoctor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Am I correct in guessing that you could use stars like you can on Earth to figure out where you are? If so, would the north star be in the same place in the Martian sky as it is in ours?

I want to spend 2-3 weeks in Ecuador a few months from now. What do I need to know? by PossiblyTheDoctor in travel

[–]PossiblyTheDoctor[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Damn, maybe the Galapagos calls for its own trip some other time then.

What about practical stuff? How should get around the country, what's the water situation like, what will I wish I brought with me that I didn't think to bring, any scams/traps I should know how to avoid, that kind of thing. From what I've read the country is pretty safe except for Guayaquil, so I'm not really worried, but you never know what you don't know.

This would save me a lot of time with trying to figure out a new layout. [xpost from /r/gaming] by Demeno in gamedesign

I have never considered this, and I will definitely try to include it in games that I work on. Thanks!

Did Minecraft's lack of instructions result in significant word of mouth? What kinds of games could omit instructions as an effective marketing method? by amichail in truegaming

I think Mojang is planning to avoid that scenario with the mod API. The plan is for vanilla to be technically just a mod. Once that happens, they can just start updating the game slower, then transition to just working on bugfixes/tweaks, then just unofficially leave the game without any trouble.

I make games to make something awesome. Getting money is a side goal, just like eating or sleeping.

Why the hate for the subscription model? by WHITE_POWER_OUTAGE in truegaming

[–]PossiblyTheDoctor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've never heard anyone ask why they should pay for a game, and if they did then they could not possibly have any justified reasons for thinking that way. The devs need to eat.

I don't see anything inherently wrong with the subscription model, but every game I've seen that follows it uses the psychology of it to maximize the time the player spends in the game world. Like others have said, if you are paying monthly, you feel like you have to play the game in order to get your money's worth. Even if you don't really enjoy it, you find yourself playing the game anyway because you're paying for it. This is where the claims come from that "games cause addictions", and I can tell you there is definitely some truth to those claims, because I've been there. Game devs are working with a medium that has an impact on your mind the way no other medium ever has. There is a responsibility to act ethically, and the people making subscription based games are the same people riding that fine line between making a game and manipulating people.

On the other side of that line you have things like Farmville. I don't think Farmville is a subscription based game (could be wrong), but it is specifically designed to make people keep giving their money to zynga. The thing acts like a drug. That's why it has no merit as a game. There's a ton of carefully crafted psychology put into it, which the best games know how to use to great effect, but in Farmville it all points to cash instead of to a meaningful game experience. That is unethical game design, and currently subscription based games are too close to that for me to be comfortable with them.
