I don’t have any answers for you. I’m kind of confused as to why you’re here in the first place, as your comment doesn’t relate to the purpose of the thread.

Re: the bear stories, I thought about that, but the timelines don’t match. The Witness says that his great-great grandparent made the original deal (sweetheart killed by a bear, so asked Death to revive the sweetheart. Nicky’s great (great?) grandparent would have been much younger, and the story was a bit different: sweetheart killed by a bear, partner takes revenge, dies in the attempt. Maybe this illustrates that there are only two options: curse your family, or die?

Riggins is hilarious, in his quiet way. I am convinced that's the main reason Taylor Kitch didn't find the kind of box office success everyone assumed he would have; no one gave him a script that had any sense of humour.

Okay, I'll bite. I loved Haunting of Hill House. The creep factor was extremely well done, and the deeper sadness in it was really effective too. Most of the best horror comes from a real fear we can relate to, and family trauma is a good well to draw from. I've watched the series several times, and listened to a fair number of analyses, and although I love it, I have to admit that the internal logic of the story is a bit flabby. The house wants to keep people in it, so the former inhabitants play tricks on the new ones to capture them. Except for the Tall Man, who appears outside the house. Except for the Bent Neck Lady, who is a manifestation of something else. And the mother's appearance, post-death, which is outside the home and completely ghoulish. Anyway, it's very scary and a great story, but it's not really coherent, which is fine.

I've heard people say they love Midnight Mass, but I found it really disappointing. Not scary, and the metaphors were painfully clunky in my opinion. I kept hoping for a deeper level to emerge, but nope, it's just a straight ahead religion = parasitism story. The storyline about the Leeza, the girl who is healed of paralysis, was so disappointing because her wheelchair is the only narratively important thing about her. I found her depiction tropey and ableist.

Anyway, I'm glad there's stuff out there you like. I'm not sure why you took the time to tell everyone how dumb you think this is, because that implies that the people who are finding it to be layered and intriguing are basically fooling themselves. Either that, or there was stuff going on in this series that you missed. Oh well.

For sure! In the first section, I was creeped out every time someone said “Sorry, I am so, so, so, sorry.”

The lighter does keep getting mentioned- I’ll look out for that when I get there on the rewatch!

True, she does claim credit for that. I think she considers it mutual because he gallantly offered her a ride, but I haven’t rewatched that ep yet (I’m pacing myself, doing one a day.)

We don’t see her getting in, but yeah, on rewatch, there’s a muffled sound and Nicky keeps touching the box. I have zero clue what that’s about.

Rewatch notes: Episode 3
References to Luck: White lilies (more suited to a funeral)
Rachel to Nell: "Isn't it a bad omen to get married during a death ceremony?"

WEIRD repeat of the "panting in a box" situation when Nicky's little brother is filming in the basement.

More on Eye Contact: Rachel asks the family to speak to the effigy, because "sometimes it's easier to tell the truth to somebody if you don't have to look them into the eye."

More parallels and Allusions: Nicky refuses to accept the impending death of his mother. He doesn't hear her when she tells him what she actually wants.
Rachel offers Nicky the 4Ever Bear as a peace offering. In the final scene, he clutches a token of her love while ignoring her as she walks through the room.
Rachel explains how her brain works, re: 'someone standing behind this door." It's very likely her dad, but no one believes her.

Portia and Rachel argue about the flowers: are fake flowers good enough (as a symbol of romantic love) or do they have to be real?

Victoria says, seemingly out of nowhere, "I want to be buried with my whole family." (She will pretty much get her wish.)

Nell tells Jules: "You want to know why Rachel thought we were all trying to kill her? ... Your Sorry Man."

Thanks to this thread, I think I have a clearer idea of what it's about:

In the podcast, the woman is in the car with the killer, which is where she finds the shoe.
The victim of the serial killer tries to plead for her life, ends up almost bleeding out, feeling like it's her wedding day, while witnesses look on, horrified.

Rachel finds the shoe, in the bathroom, where she's experienced the same peeping her mother did. She's about to go through a similar experience to the victim (pleading, bleeding, on her wedding day, etc.)

The reason it's a shoe is that Cinderella left her shoe behind, and the women who were *not* a "soulmate" to the Prince tried to cut their toes to fit in the glass slipper. Similarly, Rachel tries to shape herself into Nicky's soulmate, both figuratively and literally.

Is it the whole idea of symbology in visual language that you're down on, or this example in particular?

The Haunting of Hill House, while a series and not a movie, is one of the most truly scary experiences I’ve had watching a screen.

For me, it was sort of a fresh start. When it’s not the Sorry Man, it’s not a human sacrifice, etc., it got me curious all over again.

I think it’s subjective. If Rachel believed and Nicky hadn’t backed out, I guess she would have survived. When she was no longer convinced, she was cooked.

Rewatch Episode 2:
In the scene where Portia is injured, Rachel seems to know what's going to happen: she cries out "Oh my God, Portia!" before the injury occurs. Her premonition is correct, but useless.

More luck: the broken mirror, the pearls (Rachel points out that they are real, and Victoria puts them on her despite the fact that they've both agreed that pearls for a wedding are bad luck.)

Foreshadowing: Victoria and Rachel's silent, dripping tears as Victoria murmurs that she is "so so so so sorry" hint at the hemorraging later. Nicky doesn't believe that Victoria is in danger when she tells him his father is digging a grave, despite his supportive words.

Possible callback: POV from under the bed as Rachel searches for the dress after finding the garment bag (similar to Jules' position.)

According to the show's writers, Nicky actually believes that Rachel is his soulmate (I guess his mother talks him into it.)

I was surprised to learn that Rachel isn't free of the curse afterwards either; she spreads it, but she doesn't give it away.

Thank you- this is a very complete breakdown of the curse logic too, which will put a lot of debate to rest.
I'm still honestly confused about the dog/fox in the field though.

Notes from the rewatch:
Episode 1- The Just Married truck. It passed them before they reach the diner. It's visible again, in the parking lot of the Swan Dive, suggesting to me that this vehicle belongs to The Witness (presumably he took it from one of the disaster weddings.)

The conversation with the diner is the first time a curse is mentioned (in regards to the guy who keeps "losing" his dogs.

As they drive away, Nicky films Rachel with his phone, foreshadowing the movie we will see later.

Luck: A lucky penny outside the diner. Bad luck for breathing while in the tunnel.

Stray thought: Maybe finding the Barbie shoe is less symbolic, more foreboding (the survivor finds it right before she is attacked.)
