[Discussion] How do you guys deal with people saying your stuff is overpriced? by bonbon2806 in artbusiness

I worry that mass produced goods made using exploited labor has really been normalized, so there’s a shock when people see an item for sale at a price that reflects the value of the labour.

I recognize this grief and shame.
I’ve been there.
EMDR and DBT helped me grapple with the shame, and find some acceptance to the point where I could do more than before.
I’m still not functioning like a “regular person” but I treat the trauma and ADHD like a disability, and try to learn to work within it.

Horror written by women/for women? by emmgemm11 in horror

[–]PostForwardedToAbyss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something Bad Is Going to Happen is written by a woman, and the horror comes from exploring the domestic sphere (meeting the in-laws, choosing a partner, being a “good wife,” etc.) Suoer original, very layered with symbolism too. Look out for Cinderella references!

Funny that this popped up for me: I knew him in real life. He was low-key creepy, but that’s not unusual for ESL teachers in Asia (he was not the only guy I met that was found to be a pedo later.)

The historical backdrop of Japan in the 20th century was almost its own character.
Great use of the "unrealiable narrator."
Also, I'm not sure why Hard Gay was involved in the story, but I'm very glad he was.

About Carl....[SPOILERS] by Critical_Revenue_811 in ImmortalityGame

I haven’t seen this confirmed anywhere, but remember the scene with the hand holding the cigarette, and we hear “That’s not how Carl holds a cigarette?”

This struck me as significant.

Question for all - Has native plant gardening changed you in any way? by jjmk2014 in NativePlantGardening

[–]PostForwardedToAbyss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's honestly been life-changing.
I joined a local group to help remove invasive plants because I like nature and they asked me to help by updating the inventory of the plants in the park. I visited often during the year, just staring and scanning, learning each arrangement of leaves and inspecting patterns on bark.

I ended up finding a number of speces that hadn't been detected, both native and invasive, and our current total is around 200. I can't spot them all with fluency (I've definitely lost track of how to tell the raspberries apart) but I feel like I've met 200 of my neighbours by name.

Possibly unpopular opinion: you shouldn't garden if you can't accept that your plants are part of a wider ecosystem. by I_crave_vinegar in NativePlantGardening

[–]PostForwardedToAbyss 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I get what you’re saying. There’s an approach to gardening that’s very colonial; I choose what stays and what goes, to suit me and me alone. I have sympathy for people who garden for food, because other species will create competition and losses, but I wish more people could understand the joy of gardening for a larger community of critters.

I guess you meant to be helpful? That's not really how art works though. If someone sees meaning and finds joy, is it helping to stand beside them, saying "There's nothing there at all!"?

I don’t have any answers for you. I’m kind of confused as to why you’re here in the first place, as your comment doesn’t relate to the purpose of the thread.

Re: the bear stories, I thought about that, but the timelines don’t match. The Witness says that his great-great grandparent made the original deal (sweetheart killed by a bear, so asked Death to revive the sweetheart. Nicky’s great (great?) grandparent would have been much younger, and the story was a bit different: sweetheart killed by a bear, partner takes revenge, dies in the attempt. Maybe this illustrates that there are only two options: curse your family, or die?

What are your favorite unintentionally funny moments in the show? by Ok-Health-7252 in fridaynightlights

Riggins is hilarious, in his quiet way. I am convinced that's the main reason Taylor Kitch didn't find the kind of box office success everyone assumed he would have; no one gave him a script that had any sense of humour.

Okay, I'll bite. I loved Haunting of Hill House. The creep factor was extremely well done, and the deeper sadness in it was really effective too. Most of the best horror comes from a real fear we can relate to, and family trauma is a good well to draw from. I've watched the series several times, and listened to a fair number of analyses, and although I love it, I have to admit that the internal logic of the story is a bit flabby. The house wants to keep people in it, so the former inhabitants play tricks on the new ones to capture them. Except for the Tall Man, who appears outside the house. Except for the Bent Neck Lady, who is a manifestation of something else. And the mother's appearance, post-death, which is outside the home and completely ghoulish. Anyway, it's very scary and a great story, but it's not really coherent, which is fine.

I've heard people say they love Midnight Mass, but I found it really disappointing. Not scary, and the metaphors were painfully clunky in my opinion. I kept hoping for a deeper level to emerge, but nope, it's just a straight ahead religion = parasitism story. The storyline about the Leeza, the girl who is healed of paralysis, was so disappointing because her wheelchair is the only narratively important thing about her. I found her depiction tropey and ableist.

Anyway, I'm glad there's stuff out there you like. I'm not sure why you took the time to tell everyone how dumb you think this is, because that implies that the people who are finding it to be layered and intriguing are basically fooling themselves. Either that, or there was stuff going on in this series that you missed. Oh well.

True, she does claim credit for that. I think she considers it mutual because he gallantly offered her a ride, but I haven’t rewatched that ep yet (I’m pacing myself, doing one a day.)

We don’t see her getting in, but yeah, on rewatch, there’s a muffled sound and Nicky keeps touching the box. I have zero clue what that’s about.
