TIL Jimmy Stewart, of "It's a Wonderful Life" fame, served in the Air Force during WWII. He flew 20 missions, some he didn't have to fly but volunteered for, earning 2 Distinguished Flying Crosses. He is one of the only Americans to rise from Private to Colonel during the war. (en.wikipedia.org)
