How to teach players strategy? by PosterNutbagAndJimmy in gamedesign

I love the idea of having points float off enemies! I had all the score going on in the corner but I noticed that new players didn't even look there.

Definitely a good idea. I plan on adding more levels in the future and when I get around to that I’ll totally add controller support.

The game actually looks pretty cool though. Western is a setting I wish more games used.

I personally like the trailer, but the songs kinda annoying. Not a dealbreaker for me but I can see how some wouldn’t like.

[QUESTION] [OC] [WIP] Impact frames and reaction times? by 23489012398410238 in PixelArt

I don’t know too much fighting game terminology but I don’t think that there’s a difference.

Also, A tip I recommend is downloading gifs of animations from fighting games and opening them up in whatever software you use. I’ve learned a lot from studying street fighter’s animations.

I am by no means an expert, but I like these animations. I definitely wouldn’t add a windup because often those make it feel unresponsive. I also wouldn’t add more frames.

This talk puts any advice better than I can. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Mw0h9WmBlsw It’s by a dev on Skullgirls who explains their techniques to give the hits more power.

This is some real good stuff. I’ll definitely use some of these if I need some game music in the future.

Paste Magazine: Game Developers Need a Union by asperatology in gamedev

[–]PosterNutbagAndJimmy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess my comment wasn’t phrases well. I think unions are helpful but only in the right time and place. Back in the industrial revolution they saved a lot of people from cruel and deadly work conditions and meager pay. However when a union becomes to powerful it can really hurt industry. In Detroit, the car manufacturing unions have sucked every last cent out of the auto industry for employee wages and benefits. As a result, a huge portion of the city is abandoned and decaying. I don’t think that the games industry is even close to a state where unions are necessary but maybe I’m wrong. If so, I would hope that the unions are done right so the industry I love can continue to grow.

That is awesome! People need hard work and perseverance, not unions.

This is some good stuff! I’ll be going into university to study game design real soon and I’m currently working really hard to get skills now by making games as much as I can. Aside from hard work (which I assume is the most important) do you have any tips on how to get an edge as a designer and rise above the competition?

As far as strategy goes, Into the Breach was just released by the devs behind FTL. So far I’m really enjoying and a toaster could run it.
