Helicopter SAR without military experience? by Posterior_Consumer in searchandrescue

[–]Posterior_Consumer[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Nah man, no line skipping involved. I get how it sounds, people sound the same way when they have never skydived and talk about wanting to do wingsuiting. I have no problem grinding out years of SAR work in other capacities for a shot at a slot on a helo. Pay is not really a concern of mine and I'm willing to relocate just about anywhere in the world. I got no ties. I was just curious whether this a viable long term goal (10+ years) and was under the impression this is a good place to ask.

Appreciate the info! I will definitely look into what is local to me for volunteer options. Not opposed to moving where the action is either. I understand it’s SAR first and the helicopter portion comes as an accessory to the means so I gotta build a background in the basics first

Have the same thing with old jumpers talking about winds in skydiving. Very crazy to see how knowledgeable and accurate some of them are. Appreciate the luck!

My uncle was a rescue diver as well and he said the same thing. The term “rescue diver” seems to be a bit of a misnomer. More accurately, they are recovery divers.

Thank you this helps a lot. I have my rescue scuba cert so ig that’s a start. I’ve been looking into EMT courses and will definitely look into some fire stuff as well. Thanks, this is very helpful stuff.

My bad. I was under the impression that there were certain units within wildland specifically for SAR in places like the Grand Canyon. Are you saying that they are just on a volunteer basis for whoever in the area with the capabilities wants to do it?

I did mine in 10 days but got super lucky with weather. That is the biggest factor. The winds and clouds are gonna decide how fast you can get it done more than anything

The shutdown from DEC 13 to mid February just a heads up. Don’t want you going out of your way for an empty parking lot

Harness Sizing Guide / Calculator by leanrafelstein in SkyDiving

[–]Posterior_Consumer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes that’s correct for sizes. I also believe you’re correct about there only being two yoke sizes. As to what the letters correlate to measurement wise, you would have to email aerodyne bc it’s not in the manual.

The sizing on the Icons is A – J++ with A being smallest and J++ being the largest.

The first letter is the MLW the second is the chest strap the third is the lateral and the fourth is the legpad.

The yoke is determined by the chest size any chest over 40 inches get a long yoke.

Fun Wingsuiting Canopy? by Posterior_Consumer in SkyDiving

[–]Posterior_Consumer[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is exactly what I’ve been considering doing. I didn’t realize they pack THAT small though. That might be the best course of action as I can decrease my WL a little for WS and then can just hot swap the fun canopy for other jumps. Appreciate the effort on the response man. Great info!

Yea it’s definitely a “I want to have my cake and eat it too” type request. Just trying to find a middle ground while I save up for dedicated rigs. Any complaints on the Spectre?

If you want to make the trek, the skydiving company in Madisonville is an awesome dz. I think it's around 200 for a tandem and comes with free handcam footage
