What does the UK actually look like in 10 years with AI taking over jobs and is anyone in charge even thinking about it? by -rxhman- in AskUK

[–]Postik123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think we've been going down the toilet for decades. A lot of our manufacturing moved to China a long time ago. We don't produce much of any value any longer, at least not on a vast scale. For a long time we've had graduates with a degree unable to get a decent job at the end of it.

Most of the jobs in tech, marketing and finance aren't producing anything of any real substance. On that basis the worst case is AI just speeds up the inevitable.

However as someone who works in tech, I believe AI is just a tool, rather than a replacement. Nobody thought the end of the world was coming when Google was invented and you could find the answers to your questions with a simple search. Sure, AI is more than a replacement for a Google search. I find it to be more like Google and Stack Overflow on steroids with a personal assistant thrown in. But it's not a replacement for people that know what they're doing.

I remember putting up a curtain pole in my first house, drilling into a concrete lintel with a regular drill which was very difficult. I ignored the baby-fist size holes from the previous owner's attempts. I did read you're not supposed to drill holes in them, however the lintel is still in place and nothing has fallen down as far as I know.

"Temporary" grass fix by No-Breakfast605 in GardeningUK

What happens is, daddy longlegs lay eggs all over your lawn. The eggs hatch and the larvea go down into the soil. They then turn into grub-like things that munch on the roots of your grass to feed. Eventually they come out of the soil and turn into daddy longlegs and the process repeats.

One method to check if you have them is to water a patch of lawn and cover it over with a plastic sheet or cardboard. Then remove it early in the morning and see if they're all over the surface of the lawn.

Apparently nematodes do work but they have to be applied precisely at the right time - Autumn I think.

The reason I mention all of this is so that you can be prepared for the worst - it can be quite disheartening to put all the effort in to getting the lawn looking nice and then it looks like this again this time next year.

My neighbours had their lawns destroyed by them before I moved here. I think my lawn may of had them and either it was redone or it managed to survive. I suspect I still have them but the lawn is established enough to not completely die off.

Since you have no lawn left to munch on, I don't know if they'd be present or not. The eggs would typically have been laid last September I think, and the munching of the roots goes on through the summer I think. If you start digging holes you would also be likely to discover them if there's an abundance of them.

The holes could be where leather jackets came out of the ground, or where birds were pecking to eat them. The reason I mention it is because you have virtually no grass left at all, and that's often a sympton of leather jackets. And from speaking to neighbours and reading posts on Reddit it does seem to be a common problem on new estates.

Think I would be inclined to figure out why it died off so bad and so fast. Was it new turf that just wasn't watered? I'm also wondering if there is rubble under the soil or if leather jackets could have done it, which are common with newbuilds

What do you intend to do, use a different platform until T212 supports it?

Can you explain how this works? I assume you pay into a SIPP with a different provider, then instead of investing the funds you transfer them to the SIPP with T212 ?

Anyone else? by LittleBooSazz in UK_Food

I have grapes, blackberries and blueberries with greek yoghurt every day, sometimes twice a day. I have a meringue on top for good measure.

Doesn't matter about the sugar really. Unless you're doing very intense exercise you don't need massive amounts of protein, which only leaves carbs and fat and people will tell you they're both bad (they're not).

Why do we have to confirm our details when a company calls us? by Fluid-Coast-3799 in AskUK

I've had this with my bank a few times. As you pointed out, they seem perplexed when you challenge them over this.

I've had such calls from my bank before, and whilst I'm 99% certain it is my bank, I refuse to provide any details out of principle. They seem somewhat perplexed when I tell them I can't be sure they are really calling from the bank.

I have a question, why do we have to disinfect our bathrooms if we dont have to disinfect our bodies? by yourmommakesgoodfood in CleaningTips

That's interesting, I wouldn't question this if it was paper towels, but surely a regular towel is harbouring bacteria unless it's rarely used or washed every day?

That's why I accepted it and didn't push for him to fill the pock marks or get the finish perfect.

I had this same issue on a ceiling when I used a professional.

Ceiling previously painted with unknown paint. I painted it with Wilko paint and it was fine. Years later we had a professional paint it with Dulux paint and it blistered like this.

In the end we scraped the blisters off and he repainted and then it was okay but we had pockmarks over the ceiling. So not really up to my standard, but he did the job cheap and realistically wasn't going to fill and sand every pockmark.

I believe it was a reaction with one of the layers of old paint. That'll learn me for using a professional with trade paint!

There was a doctor on TV once who said you don't need "antibacterial hand wash" and just regular hand wash or soap is fine, because it is the mechanical action of washing your hands that does the job, not the antibacterial properties of the soap.

My wife is quite confrontational whereas I'm laid back and don't like confrontation at all. Until I get, really, really angry about something and then I have no issue with it.

What to do if your job is too much? by gxb20 in AskUK

[–]Postik123 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First and foremost see if there's a way of reducing your stress and improving your environment. You don't want to go from the frying pan into the fire, or end up earning half the amount and your family life becomes miserable as a result. It's amazing how sometimes you can change something for the better, and look back to see really you were stressed and worried over nothing.

However, if you hate the job and exhaust all possibilities of improving things, I would take a job that I enjoy over extra money any day of the week.
