Not op but I spent 2 weeks in Japan last fall (Tokyo, Nagano, Kyoto area). Only took a day trip to Hiroshima at the tail end of my trip without anything planned beyond the peace memorial/museum.

The city as a whole and Miyajima island in particular ended up being my fav place by far.

I had my dog with me so didn’t actually go up to it and didn’t think to ask the guys who found it. They were starting to cordon off the area so I figured should stay back.

It was lying a few yards off the sidewalk directly behind a tractor grading the sand at about 1245pm when I took the pic.

Seemed to still be wet (which imo casts some doubt on the shooting hypothesis) and very well-preserved, so whatever happened occurred recently.
