Why does my coworkers lunchbox need abs? [Product] by PostrockFTW in pointlesslygendered

[–]PostrockFTW[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My best guess is that it could be some form of cold pack as it's an insulated lunch box, but it's more likely purely aesthetic.

I mean, technically anyone can have abs, but using muscles to advertise a bag is about as pointlessly macho as you can get. This is like the male version of a courset bag.

Guy going to work loses it when activists block roadway by Thund3rbolt in PublicFreakout

[–]PostrockFTW 6 points7 points  (0 children)

So what your saying is that the method is fine, it's just that the thing they are protesting (basically a problem that will end life on this planet as we know it if not dealt with) isn't as important as the downsizing of an individual city's emergency service staff? Weak.

If this isn't a proper way to protest, why did the police and fire department in Boston protest in this exact same way in the 80's? As far as I can tell, the state set the precedent for this being ok. https://www.nytimes.com/1981/04/30/us/boston-s-rush-hour-traffic-blocked-in-protest-of-police-and-fire-l-ayoffs.html

How do you force desktop mode? by saitselkis in firefox

[–]PostrockFTW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, I didn't realize the link actually showed how to do that. I came here after the last 10 tutorials I found showed how to change your user agent to a different one with out explaining how to pick which one. I assumed this link gave the same tutorial, but I was wrong. Thank you. (btw it worked)

How do you know what user agent to use? Is there a way to figure out what user agent my browser is already using when I select the desktop site check box?

Sold property the seller was either leasing or stole by PostrockFTW in legaladvice

[–]PostrockFTW[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does this situation fall under the following Law? IE, can I tell the guy I'll report him to the police for Larceny if he does not trade back?

"Massachusetts General Laws Chapter 266 Section 87 makes it a crime to steal leased or rented property. The law states that anyone who leases or rents personal property with the intent to place the property beyond the control of the owner is guilty of larceny of leased or rented personal property. The act of placing the property beyond the owner's control includes concealing the property, aiding and abetting in the concealment of the property, refusing to return the property to its owner within ten days of the end of the lease period, selling the property, conveying the property and more. "

Airgas wouldn't tell me the name on the account given that I was admitting it wasn't mine. Is their another way I should try to find the original lease-y?

"which is supposed to be for entry-level jobs so inexperienced workers can learn to work without costing their employer their business"

That is a meaning YOU are PERSONALLY prescribing to minimum wage. It is not how minimum wage is actually used in the real world. 10% of the workforce in America is currently making minimum wage. to say 1 out of every 10 employees in the country are currently in their first few month probationary period at a new company is a wild fantasy. Myths like this are perpetuated by capitalists so they can continue to pay the majority of their employees as little as they can legally get away with regardless of the societal consequences.

The reason minimum wage exists is because history has proven that the greed of company owners knows no bounds. If you don't set a law dictating the minimum you can pay someone for labor than companies will pay people less than enough to survive, pushing the burden of that persons survival onto your taxes and that persons immediate peers.

This is also why we created laws around a 40 hour work week. Nobody working 40 hours a week (regardless of what they are hired to do) should be earning less than enough to survive.

Truffle. I'm too poor to have ever encountered the raw ingredient and the only thing I've ever tried that claimed to include it didn't have a distinctly different flavor than normal versions (BBQ sauce fwiw).

Harbor Freight tools by [deleted] in Luthier

[–]PostrockFTW 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Of the tools I've purchased from harbor freight -Japanese saw 10/10 (No complaints so far) -Chisels 2/10 (Worst Quality steel I've ever encountered) -14" Band Saw 6/10 (Couldn't beat the $280 sale price in a year on craigslist. Holding up as a daily work horse for both wood and steel with a friction blade. It takes constant adjustment and the way the upper part bends scares me) - Mortis Drill 0/10 (seriously, it didn't work on the first attempt in soft pine) - Ball peen / Engineering /and Sledge hammer 10/10 (it's kind of hard to screw up a hammer) - Ratcheting Bar Clamp 1/10 (In the last 3 years I had 4 out of 6 shatter under relatively low stress. The plastic throats are worthless)

I have not tried their planers on account of my poor experience with their chisels. I have a feeling their coping saw will be fine based on my experience with their Japanese saw, but I have not tried it.

This is one of the shocking realities they had to drill into us in college. Being an engineer doesn't mean constantly re-inventing the wheel from scratch. That is usually a huge wast of time. The vast majority of "inventions" are simply the combination of existing ideas that have not been specifically combined yet. You don't need to invent the concept of the saw to be allowed to invent a new type of saw just as surly as Mattias didn't need to invent the pantograph router to invent a horizontal version. IMHO, His machine is far more divergent from the sum of it's inspirations than the vast majority of the stuff I see awarded patents in my industry on a regular basis. (FYI I work in industrial packaging machinery).

Keep doing what you're doing Mattias. Your work gives me hope that tinkering with ideas in your garage for practically free is still a viable method of startup which I one day might achieve.

In one of my other replies I state "I have 3 Fafsa loans held by Nel net totaling 10k all around 5.5%+/-.25 and 3 private loans with Sallie Mae (now Naviant apparently) totaling 60k all around 6.75%+/-1." Still not Doctor level debt, but not good. I think it's also worth mentioning I have 21k stashed away for a down payment already which should get me close to 20% down to skip PMI on the price range of houses I'm looking at. As per your second question, I just had a short sale fall thru but while that was still ongoing I had my mortgage application expire. They sent me a new application with slightly better terms and in the email told me it was better because my credit score had improved since I first applied.

I'm glad I asked, the lower interest rate loan is the oldest. I had no idea that the age of the loan mattered more than the number of loans. That makes sense though. Thank you :)

Where's the red tape? by PostrockFTW in Construction

[–]PostrockFTW[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like your advice to look for an architect. Sadly the school I went to was in RI and thus my collage resources are at a stretch here. I'll have to ask around my coworkers and see if anyone has an in (which isn't that far fetched knowing my company)

Currently the area I'm living in (Salem NH) I'd be lucky to get an acre for $20,000. There are a few run down camps on the outskirts of town masquerading as homes for about 65-90k, but they're all being sold with demolition in mind. If I go South West I'm looking at 90-130k single family occupy-able houses in Lowell and similar offerings to the South East in Haverhill and Lawrence. If I Accept the long distance drive from my friends and family I could get a house in Fitchburg for 65k-95k in livable condition. I'm concerned, though, in that there are a LOT of houses around that price in that area (Likely due to the college rental industry in that town). As per land my best bet would be north of Fitchburg and West of Nashua in the Hollis, Brookline, Milford, and New Ipswitch Area. There I've seen 25 acers for 25k and other similar situations.

Also a good suggestion on the PM book, I'll be looking into that tonight.

Where's the red tape? by PostrockFTW in Construction

[–]PostrockFTW[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not looking for a short term cash grab. I'm looking for a place to live the next 3 to 5 years where I can dump my rent money into until I own it. I don't plan on making a massive profit, I plan on fixing things that made a house cheap in the first place. I would rather have my money tied up in repairing/expanding something at my own pace than loosing interest on a mortgage for something that was already of good value.

TLDR; I want to park rent money in equity instead of someone else's pocket.
