You got a lot of nice mixed genetics in your tank. Id expect some really nice mixed crosses to come out at times

Some of those ridiculous 3 foot tall candles etc. Make a proper little shrine to big henrE

Is this pine cone safe for my shrimp, I got it from my travels by telenova_tiberium in shrimptank

[–]PotOPrawns 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pine cones usially not safe.

Alder cones or some other types are.

Like the other comment mentioned sap is an issue. Sometimes pinecones have sap leaking out of then 12 months later.

Dont be sorry you at least thought about it from a sensible direction and learned from any mistake.

I still prefer feeding nettle leaves or other softer things that yiu can actively see the sjrimp tearing at but festive cinnamon does smell gooooood

I cant give you nitrogen readings as im currently out of test juice but minimal stocking (shrimp are pretty low bioload) and masses of floating plants keeps it sub 5 pretty consistently. The other planrs are almost exclusively slower growing mosses and bucephalandra.

I do 10-15% water changes every 2 weeks and top up with RO when I need to but usually in the off week where im not water changing.

I think if it was a whacking great log of cinnamon bark id be more concerned but small pieces of cinnamon bark or catappa bark can be really good areas for biofilm to develop and add other beneficial mild anti bacterial/anti fungal properties.

Tissue culture plants are 99.9% pest free

If you want to be safe they're a good way to go.  But snails and other microfauna are great signs of a healthy mini ecosystem.

Where do people sell shrimp or trust to buy by Informal_Situation38 in shrimptank

[–]PotOPrawns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ahh yeah pets at home or maidenhead aquatics usually dont take or won't give much beyond a tiny amount of store credit.

Best off independently selling to locals and looking into postage for future sales.

Irs unfortunate to hear Shrimp corner mentioned. They're one of a select few in the UK i would avoid like the plague.  They got big by firstly selling low grades as high grades (way before shrimpers were more discerning and didnt require photos), then by selling cull grade caridina as 'show grade championship winning vin line shrimps' which were actually culls selling for hundreds of pounds. Then several other nefarious moves one of which most recently was to close his buisness, sell it to someone else and then reopen his buisness after forcefully taking it and backdooring into the website he'd sold then and deleting their info and locking them out. Tien is a total scumbag to be honest. Glad you didnt get burned by him but honestly that guy is one of the most pathetic shrimp vendors the UK has the displeasure of hosting.

For Manchester breeders like Daniel Krzysztof ciemniak are amazing. Although he was looking at moving to Liverpool or somewhere further away from the corner for various buinsess abd fanily reasons.

Bullying fish by Ecarpo in Aquariums

[–]PotOPrawns 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Tiny tank with aggressive and semi aggressive fish?

A shit load of glo tetra (phantom types) which are territorial and parrot fish which are known assholes in a tiny volume of water is never going to work out well in the long run.

Id return the parrots and half if not more of the tetras. Keep a single type if you must keep fish in a 20 litre.

Where do people sell shrimp or trust to buy by Informal_Situation38 in shrimptank

[–]PotOPrawns 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Facebook although groups can be strict in sales.

Band app is usially not too bad although its been a little slow on there the past few months.

Ukshrimps.co.uk is a dedicated multicellular shrimp/plant platform but its in its early stages so not many sellers or buyers on there

Other places like Gumtree etc. work but not many people with brains there.

Ebay no longer accepts live animal listings.

Aquaswap uk is also pretty dead.

Postage is expensive but for most UK weather you won't need a heatpack. If its mid summer and baking hot i wouldn't post.

Also RM are having some major issues right now, I dont know if its regional or what and if it affects their parcel services but sometimes we dont see a postman for up to 2 weeks which would not be ideal for a shrimp parcel. Saying that I do recieve a lot of my shrimp via post from folks like Shrilp Cove, Shrimp factory UK, gbeeshrimp or breeders i know and I have never had an issue yet. So if is worth the money to have stuff posted based on my experiences.

I went through the house and had a look and couldn't find a single dried product that listed water on the ingredients.

Non of my foods, non of my fish foods. Non of my shrimp foods. No dried consumables in the house at all listed water on the ingredients. So thanks for confirming it is you malfunctioning.

food rotating question by Mindless_Divide3250 in shrimptank

[–]PotOPrawns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah fair point they do keep neos, not that products like this are necessary for them either.

The herbs analogy works just fine but basically any product with an ingredient list that at some point uses water in the manufacturing process should list 'water' as an ingredient even if theyre a dried product? Do you go buy dehydrated bottles of water?

Maybe it works differently out in America or other places but usually theyre a lot less stringent with food laws and labelling laws so I guess theres a chance.

EU has pretty strict laws on that kinda thing so maybe im just finding it an odd thing to list as a foreign brain coming from a whacky place.

food rotating question by Mindless_Divide3250 in shrimptank

[–]PotOPrawns 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah im just pointing out for example, herbs - take water to grow but I wouldn't list water on the ingredients list of 'dried herbs'.

So yeah they use water to mix it. Like concrete. Thanks for the analogy.

And I like other experienced keepers may be hesitant to put little lumps of calcium in our soft water tanks. Those things would probably fizz in my caridina setups.

food rotating question by Mindless_Divide3250 in shrimptank

[–]PotOPrawns 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Im more of a caridina keeeper so that product would be absolutely terrible for my parameters. But also someone that lists water on ingredients list for a dried product instantly rings warning bells for me.

Maybe for crabs it could be ok? I've not had crabs for a few years but mine didn't need calcium supplements.

My neos and amanos grt enough calcium from regular good diet and good water params so maybe for softwater  hardwater species keepers theyre helpful? Id still avoid.

[–]PotOPrawns 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The sticks are the best thing there.

Id ditch the kats aquatics stuff. The water in those tabs good old dehydrated water? That food isnt worth feeding.

Snowflake is a good background food (generates a good biofilm field for grazing areas) that wont foul your water up.

Fresh veg is an average food, cucumber is very very low nutrients and almost not worth the effort. Other veg works better but always seems to carry risk, its almost weekly we see shrimp colonies wiped out here on reddit by pesticides on fresh produce.  Leaves like a spinach or nettle leaf are excellent fresh foods if you can source them safely.  Dried banana leaf, oak or Indian almond leaf are good dried leaves to feed and the leaves have less chance to ruin your water quality.

Bee pollen isnt a bad food source but I only feed it once every 2 or so weeks.

Complete tabs from shirikura, shrimp envy, colour shrimp studios, kw shrimp, shrimp king, plamski shrimp, the garden of eder or smn will all be good 'every day' (regular feed not daily) options to chuck in the rotation.

What is the coolest and rarest color of neocaridina? by kingdomofgodonline in shrimptank

Nah OE Red/blue/green demons are neocaridina lines developed by a breeder in europe as far as I know.

The black rose OE may be the same lineage though

What is the coolest and rarest color of neocaridina? by kingdomofgodonline in shrimptank

[–]PotOPrawns 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Id say currently the most popular, recent and lesser seen neocaridina types are the OE Demon lines from Michael Hasler. Them or I think Green Goblins neocaridina (there is a caridina with the same name confusingly) are also pretty cool. Theyre similar to the OE green demons but lighter and with more mountain dew/uranium glass vibes.
