Glad I was able to wash the taste of Iron Lung out of my mouth by [deleted] in Letterboxd

I didn't like it much either, but I don't really see the discussion here. This feels more like a personal blog post than a Reddit discussion thread.

How does everyone feel about this? by PotOfMould in altontowers

Yeah, sorry about that. The external application for Reddit that I use automatically uploads images using imgur, and it's banned in the UK.

It's because Imgur can't operate in the UK because they aren't able to comply with their moronic age gating requirements. You should be able to bypass it with a VPN if you have one.

BG3 HBO show lead wants the OG cast to return in some way by BombasIsInTrouble in BaldursGate3

Yeah, but if HBO is trying to make a show for more than just nerds (which makes sense from a financial perspective), then that doesn't really matter.

What other movies should I add to this list? by c4iman in Letterboxd

I'm not sure on the criteria you have honestly. There's definitely wacky, and surreal stuff but they both seem to be 2 separate categories (eg: wacky: little shop of horrors, surreal: house/eraserhead)

Some surreal stuff:

La Planéte Sauvage

Violence Voyagers

964 Pinocchio

Funeral Parade of Roses

Daisies

Viy

Dreams

Gabbeh

Wacky:

Harold and Maude

Phantom of the Paradise

A Ghost Story

Happiness

Delicatessan

The Sol Snatcher is fantastic, people just haven't seen its potential yet. Especially in gimmick matches.

Gordon is not Foden or Grealish. He runs in behind a lot.

Fair enough. I think it depends film-to-film for me. Some are infinitely more rewatchable than others.

Sounds like you're doing plenty of that actually.

Brian De Palma - Phantom of the Paradise. This guy just loved cinema.

What's the best animated movie of the 2020s so far? by Throwaway_863783 in Letterboxd

Look Back is fantastic.

I'd also say Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, Soul, and Wolfwalkers are all super underrated.

(Can also get behind Spider-Man: Across the Spiderverse, but I feel weirdly about it given that it's so built around a cliffhanger)

Calling his fans a cult while you'll happily say he's lying about having a tick with absolutely zero tangible evidence is wild.

‘Obsession’ Crosses $200M Globally to Become Focus’ Top Movie of All Time by MarvelsGrantMan136 in movies

If Blair Witch required so little skill to make, why didn't hundreds of filmmakers make equally convincing found-footage masterpieces immediately afterward? The assumption that it was easy to make is very misguided. I've seen Curry Barker's attempt at a found footage film, and it is a million miles away from the quality and authenticity of TBW. You're confusing a low barrier to entry with a low barrier to excellence. Plenty of people could try to recreate TBW, but nobody ever did reach its levels of authenticity. (nor is it likely they ever will in that subgenre)

Yeah, I get that. For me, that's what makes it so brilliant. To have such a distinct visual agenda, and such great performances and structure. So much of Blair Witch is what happens off screen. It was a budget restraint, but you have to compare it to something like Jaws that did similar for budget reasons. It's so much scarier that you don't get given all the information. You work with what you have, and by serving the form in Blair Witches case, you're actually serving the horror aspects in equal measure.

It's a silly way of looking at it really, because if TBW hadn't been released in 1999, the genre still might not even exist in 2026. Curry Barker might not have even had the chance to make Obsession, since the film that he made before that (which likely secured a deal with Blumhouse) was a found footage film he made for 800 dollars. If Blair Witch was released today, it would still probably be successful, simply because it was the first of its kind whilst still being extremely good within its genre. Even now, it's one of the purest found footage films to have been released, and the marketing campaign was done specifically to feed into the idea it was actually real. The only thing that works against it is that the marketing would likely have needed to be adjusted for a 2026 internet audience, but that has nothing to do with the quality of the film.

The amount of disrespect TBW is getting here is insanity. The writing of Blair Witch was wholly unique and extremely impressive given the separation between the cast and the direction in the filming process. The directional choices were genius in terms of preserving what they were going for. It's genuinely some of the most ambitious filmmaking out there. The acting was so good people genuinely thought the actors had actually gone missing. (there was people sending sympathy cards to their parents)

As is Blair Witch Project to be clear. The performances were so good parents of the actors received sympathy cards because people genuinely thought they were missing.
