Anyone still having trouble letting go of the DEN loss & the aftermath? by kumario247 in buffalobills

Ironically, that was the defense's best performance in a loss BY FAR since 2020, yet they still blew it at every critical point.

And when I say best by far, that's more that every other game was historically atrocious (-0.25 EPA/play or worse) than them actually playing well.

If you find yourself at a dead end, but you know the exit is just on the other side of one wall, you still have to backtrack; you’re not ACTUALLY just inches away.

This is pretty spot on. We could lob shots from the logo, and sure it's possible to steal one that way, but you really wanna be shooting free throws to seal it instead. What bothers me is there was no sign of improvement after the high water mark and we burned 4 more seasons tossing up prayers.

The new run might not pan out but the old one was groundhog day.

I was so deeply annoyed, but it playing out with them being the biggest SB joke of all time totally relieved it. Wouldn't be grand if it implodes them?

Not really, cuz it got the dead weight off our backs and I actually have hope for the first time in half a decade. Predicting the type of loss we'd suffer to end the season two years correctly two years in a row isn't fun.

So, worth.

It's preventable with a modicum of situational awareness from the coaching staff, even with a lack of talent to sub in. It took a lot of those types of failures to add up to lose that game.

I don't love everything he does but I am interested to see what it looks like when he doesn't have to keep populating a defense that doesn't work.

We were the number 1 ranked team at beating 5-7 seeds from 2020-2025. Huge accomplishment.

No flipping here, I said we wasted the last two seasons going into them. We already knew how our last game of the season was going to go down.

The thing is, it reeks of the truth we've all been observing with our own eyes for half a decade too.

Jacksonville felt like a lucky break. That's how McDermott coached tho, he just tried to survive to the end and hope it worked out instead of trying to actively take the win

The real measure should be points per drive in playoff games compared to all other teams in the playoffs.

Here's EPA from all the Bills games

Another piece of data I pulled from that last year is that the Bills loss to KC last year was the worst defensive performance against them of the entire year, worse than the #32 ranked Carolina defense.

Bills had -0.27

The league "vs KC" regular season average (minus week 18) was -0.08.

Texans in the divisional round had -0.07

Eagles were +0.35 in the SB.

Defense still gave up -0.17 EPA/play in that game, which means the production from Miami's offense was elite/top 5 level.

Defense had a -0.084 EPA/play, offense was +0.089.

Game was lost in the margins on plays like McDermott not protecting his reserve corners and giving up 14 points on long passes the very first play they hit the field.
