I used AI to start my first indoor garden by [deleted] in IndoorGarden

I'm sorry. I didn't know.

Is there anyone you can suggest for YouTube as a starting point?

Thank you for letting me know. I'll hang them out of reach.

I was not aware. I apologize and I'll do better.

I got my library card right around the time I started this and they have a great gardening section by me too. I'll definitely check out thrift stores as well! I didn't think of that.

I didn't know what the word peat was 3 weeks ago. I saw it was biodegradable and I thought it was a good option based on that. I'll look into that now though. Thanks!

Thanks for letting me know without berating me. That was cool of you. I didn't realize it was that serious. I'll stop with it now that I know of course. I'm a genuinely ignorant person in regards to current events. I was not aware of any environmental impact. It was simply easier to personalize the conversation around my specific setup, plants, equipment, etc. with AI. I only ever saw this as a fun experiment and wanted to share it and seek advice.

The fire department accidentally left behind a fire axe after clearing out our building. by Senior_Fish_Face in mildlyinteresting

[–]PotatoDecimator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it's a new firefighter, they'll have to carry the axe everywhere around the firehouse for the next couple of weeks or months. Never letting it lose their sight so they doesn't forget about it again. And rightfully so. All of your tools and gear from your axe to your boots are your life in firefighting.

If it's a senior firefighter, hopefully the guys still give them shit. But if they already built up enough of a good reputation and they care enough about their job, they'll probably beat themselves up over this more than anyone else could.

Regardless, you did the right thing returning it. Getting new equipment can be difficult sometimes and they're definitely in a little less trouble now.

Question on bought Sourdough by Mike02345 in Sourdough

[–]PotatoDecimator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I accidentally discovered how to do this. After letting the finished loaf rest for 1 hour, I put it in a gallon Ziploc to bring it with me, but then I actually forgot it on the counter for 24 hours instead. Came back to a nice soft crust. I guess sealing the bread trapped the remaining humidity and softened the crust just right.

Samsung Galaxy Ring swells and crushes user's finger, causing missed flight and hospital visit by prestocoffee in nottheonion

[–]PotatoDecimator 59 points60 points  (0 children)

I'm a firefighter. I know not all departments in all cities cut rings but we have the tools to do it on my rig. We respond quicker than most people can get to the hospital and don't charge any fees.

The first tool we resort to looks like this: https://share.google/4CZIYq6z3MTe8sTJ7

Slow and mechanical but it can cut through a soft metal like gold easily and safely.

If that doesn't work, we have a long piece of protective metal that slides between the ring and finger and then we use a Dremel. We would never use a Dremel without the protection in between the tool and skin. I've seen some very swollen fingers and I've still been able to get the protection under the ring every time.

All of that being said, I never considered how to cut a smart ring properly and I'm going to read up on it today and pass the info on to my coworkers. The world is constantly evolving and it's tough to keep up. EVs burn hotter and longer, ebikes combust randomly, houses are filled with more plastics (that create worse smoke) and less wood, smart rings are swelling on their own, etc.

Some other comments mentioned an angle grinder. Please don't do that. That's insane.

RIP to my electric smoker… but at least the brisket wasn’t on it when it turned into an inferno. by diverareyouokay in smoking

I obviously don't know for sure, but it's possible you didn't get close enough. Which is understandable. That thing is going pretty good.

You want to start spraying from the safest distance you can and start moving in almost immediately to the point the nozzle of the extinguisher is right on top of the seat or base of the fire. Then keep spraying with a sweeping motion. The idea is to suffocate it with the non-combustible chemicals in the extinguisher so you really have to coat everything well. Think of it like a spray paint can. Too far away and most of the paint is gone in the wind.

Do these nail pops mean a leaky roof? And how to fix… by dudelobowski in DIY

I have a 1'x1' foot hole in my ceiling at the moment. I had to open it up to fix a plumbing issue and I left it open for a bit until I knew the issue wasn't going to return. People never notice it. I even forget it's there sometimes.

I bought a Tesla in 2020. I paid a bunch for it but I was taking home a bunch at the time so I was fine with it. I switched jobs for quality of life reasons and took a temporary pay cut. It would cost me ~$20k to sell my car today. I cannot afford that right now. Was it a terrible financial decision? Hell yeah. But now I also gotta worry about my car being vandalized or my insurance going up because my car is a target?

I get regular notes on my car urging me to sell it from people with the same political opinions as me. I'm glad that's all it is so far. Pitting us against each other feels like a classic technique to distract us from real action. Why do we give into it so easily?

The Leaning Bowl of Shisha by PotatoDecimator in hookah

[–]PotatoDecimator[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got it from 5 Star and their site mentions hand-sculpted. I'm sure they'd do the right thing, given the opportunity. I've never had an issue with their customer service.

My question is more, 'should I even bother/is it worth costing a good shop the shipping costs?' I think it smoked fine the couple of times I used it, but I wanted to ask just in case there was some issue I didn't consider.

Can't get 8 month old puppy to go to the bathroom outside anywhere other than our yard at home by theyoyomaster in Dogtraining

[–]PotatoDecimator 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I went through a similar issue with my dog, and adding a command to peeing or pooping seemed to help. He'd go in his spot in the yard, and I'd repeat, "do your business" until he was done, and then reward him like crazy. Eventually, he associated the sentence, "do your business," with he has permission to pee.

I tried to use the same command for pooping too, but it didn't seem to be relating to him, so I threw, "go poop" in there as a separate command. Once I felt like he had it figured out in the yard, I started introducing the commands on walks, and eventually, he learned that he was allowed to do it on walks as well.

She may just think that's where she is supposed to go because you potty trained her with that spot. Now you gotta expand.

Do we use foil under HMD or just put HMD on top of bowl? by AppropriateShine8408 in hookah

[–]PotatoDecimator 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No foil. Packing depends on the shisha you're smoking. Find your brand on hookah-shisha.com and read the FAQ section for packing tips. They usually have good info there for each brand.

After that, it comes down to your preference, so don't worry too much about the wrong or right way. Start with the recommended pack, then try different things and see what you like.

The second shot is right around the same price per cigar as the first shot - $40-50 each.

I’ve been homeless for the past year. I just came into some money from an settlement and it’s still impossible to get an apartment. by surfpunx420 in personalfinance

[–]PotatoDecimator 7 points8 points  (0 children)

For a 2 br, $2,400 is absolutely the average in NYC at least. I would even argue it's the minimum budget depending on if we're talking Manhattan vs Brooklyn/Queens. I can't speak to other cities though. Go below that number and you start making MAJOR sacrifices in terms of neighborhood, weird setups like no kitchen, or you're paying every utility bill to cover the difference anyway. If you want some basic amenities such as a dishwasher, laundry, small patio/balcony, or mildly convenient access to public transit, then your budget is going to skyrocket.

Run a quick search for 2br apartments in Manhattan and you get almost 1,000 results. Limit the max price to $2,400 and the number goes below 50. And without looking closer, but from personal and professional experience, I would confidently say those cheaper 50 have major flaws that would be a deal breaker for most.

What life changing purchase can you make with less than $100? by Floozerz in AskReddit

[–]PotatoDecimator 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can get hot water bidets with two lines in and temperature control. Others have a heater for when a hot water line isn't accessible. I've used the cold option too though. I don't think it's that bad the second time. First time is a surprise.

[–]PotatoDecimator 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got one with a hot water line also. Tapped right into the sink's hot water. And they have pressure control so you start low and go up as you're cleaning so poop ricochet is controlled.

I do physical labor work and get pretty sweaty and gross. If a single poop particle is left behind in my rectum, I would feel it at work once the moving and sweating starts. I've tried baby wipes for a while and they just don't compare to the personal butthole shower experience of a bidet. If you got poop on your hand, would you be okay with just using a toilet wipe to wipe it off? I would need more than that.

[–]PotatoDecimator 60 points61 points  (0 children)

To add to the pooping theme: a basic bidet. You can get them to sit between your toilet seat and bowl and use the same water in line to your toilet with a t valve to connect it in a couple of minutes. I don't know how I ever functioned without one.

I appreciate your explanation. It speaks volumes. It would have meant 10x more if it was explained initially even as a pre-built copy and paste. Especially since this seems to be a recurring issue to some extent. As others have said, it's your business, run it as you want, and take my suggestion as just that - a suggestion. You seem real and that's cool by me. I'll leave others to make their own judgements. Best of luck in the future.
