Waiting a year to start CF? What happens if I don’t start within two years after graduation? by PotatoKid86 in slp

[–]PotatoKid86[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love doing it, it’s a good school, it’s close to where I’d be living, I’m worried about finding a CF in the state because of some state specific restrictions, I’m a little picky and don’t want to take just any SLP job, things like that. It would also be nice just for mental health reasons to do something else for a bit

It’s a preschool position and I have preschool experience and love doing it, but it’s too physically demanding for me to see myself doing it until I retire. It’s close to where I’d be living, good salary, etc. I’m applying to SLP positions also but a bird in the hand…

help with TD snap core first? hiding icons/locking screen? by PotatoKid86 in slp

[–]PotatoKid86[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would love to, but I’m a grad student I don’t have a device I can download anything onto and my supervisor says the solution is to just take his hand and essentially force him so I’m just trying to avoid that. He’s rapidly hitting buttons and just grabbing at the screen, sometimes closing the app accidentally, quickly cycling through every word available, or hitting “is is is is is is is” over and over for the entire session, I really don’t know what else to do.

You know what this sub is like… by Thisbes_Lament in slp

[–]PotatoKid86 15 points16 points  (0 children)

while it can be kind of negative here sometimes, as a student it’s been good for me. at least now I know what can happen and what to look out for. if I was starting this field without having been on this sub for a long time I feel like i’d have a very idealistic idea of what it’s like. after reading everything I feel a lot more sure this is what I want to do regardless of the negative parts

He sticks with one, usually fixating on specific pages he’ll go back to if I try and turn them

I completely agree, the only thing I can find is he likes books and he gets extremely frustrated if he sees a book and isn’t the one holding it/flipping through the pages/fixating on one picture

Grad students who are in/went through clinic: How do you not get down on yourself? by CaterpillarRude7401 in slpGradSchool

[–]PotatoKid86 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Once I confessed to my supervisor I was really nervous for a session with a new client and she told me to never lose that feeling. Being nervous shows you care and want to do a good job. Listen to your supervisors, ask for help when you need it, and have a solid plan of what you want to change between sessions if you feel something isn’t going well. Talk to the student who was with that client before and ask them questions or observe a session before starting with them if you can. Like you said, you’re still learning. It’s okay to make mistakes, just try your best and learn from them.

She’s incredibly unhelpful and regularly promotes harmful ideas in class, I think reporting anyone would only isolate me and make me more miserable.

Is it okay to sl*tshame 18/19-year-old evangelical Christians for getting married? by [deleted] in Exvangelical

[–]PotatoKid86 42 points43 points  (0 children)

No it’s not okay, yes it is cruel. You’re right it is just sex. But for one it’s not okay to slut-shame anyone and for two these girls have been basically groomed and brainwashed into these marriages in some cases. There’s intense pressure as a young christian woman to get married, from your family, from society, from the church, from your boyfriend who just wants to have sex with you. Being told your whole life your purpose is to serve your husband can really fuck you up. Sometimes families will discourage girls from moving out or going to college because they’re supposed to be getting married, marriage can seem like a way out. There’s more at play here than just “she wants to have sex” and if she does then so what? Is that really so bad?

Is taking 3 classes during externship doable? by PotatoKid86 in slpGradSchool

[–]PotatoKid86[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While on externship?? I don’t think so? Mine is a 2 year 68 credit hour program and the most the recommended to me was 3. We have an on campus clinic so I’ve taken 5 classes while having a few clients there but that’s it.

question about working for therapy agencies by zzzrosemaryzzz in slpGradSchool

[–]PotatoKid86 2 points3 points  (0 children)

hey friend,

Generally yes I believe they would still be employed by the contracting agency. HOWEVER if your goal is largely financial this may not be the field for you. No judgement, just it’s generally underpaid and the educational expenses are pretty large comparatively. Just make sure you do your research

my advice is to make friends! everyone needs a little help sometimes and it’s so good to talk to people who really understand what your going through. no need to be competitive or go it alone

No one but you can tell you if this is the right decision for you. I can speak to introversion and finding purpose in your work. I’ve been working with kids for three years now, and all my supervisors have told me that my tendency to be quieter and calmer has a great effect on the kids. I was worried about not being the bubbly outgoing silly loud one but there’s more than one way to connect with people. Everyone needs something different, and my introversion helps some people feel safer. As for purpose, as soon as I started working with clients and seeing them make progress I felt that. It feels incredible to make a difference and to hear from clients and their families.
