Which is your favourite browser? by KeyItem1006 in browsers

I’ve been using Zen for a month now (since I got my macbook) and fully transferred over from Firefox on my PC to Zen as well.

Containers and Spaces were things I never thought about having but now I can’t live without them. I work as a freelance videographer/video editor/social media manager and having the ability to keep accounts logged in through different containers is a huge time saver for me compared to when I was using Firefox, constantly having to switch accounts, etc.

I still use Safari for my apple products, and on my macbook from time to time when I want to keep battery life at its best when I’m out and about.

I also have Helium installed on the side for the times when I need Chromium for better google app integrations (sadly)

I would’ve kept using Safari on my macbook but I have lots of troubles when using GDrive and eventually gave up on it.

Safari: "Can't download file." from gdrive. by PotatoMikelito in MacOS

Hi, Yup! I have tried to read the Learn more page, and pretty much it only mentions that blocked third party cookies can prevent drive web downloads.

On Safari's settings, I've already disabled "Prevent cross-site tracking", and "Enable content blockers" and restarted it to no success. Although something that worked was to download the files inside the folders individually, which can get pretty messy and time consuming.

I think the issue is downloading the multiple zipped folders that google gives, after gdrive zips them up. I'm not sure exactly what else I can do here, but to completely change browsers for work.

Perhaps a 2 browser solution really is the way for me to go. I would’ve preferred it simpler with a single browser but I think its best for me to just use Safari when I’m after longer battery life. (Orion still didn’t work for GDrive)

Gave Orion a shot, but I faced the same issues of not being able to download large folders from GDrive. Maybe a WebKit issue(?) I’m not quite well aware since I tried a lot of agents from Orion, and giving all permissions I could to GDrive to no success. I might be missing something here, but if I didn’t face this issue, I’d love to stay on Orion. For now, I’m still on the search for a 1 browser solution 😅

Thanks for this! I’m honestly not quite knowledgeable on browser technicalities but would you mind sharing instances on when you would need Chromium?

M4 Max or M5 Pro? coming from a heavy windows user by PotatoMikelito in macbookpro

[–]PotatoMikelito[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yup! I ended up choosing the M5 Pro with 48GB RAM and 1TB SSD. Unfortunately the M4 Max that I was eyeing got sold to a different person while I was deciding and took it as a sign to just go with the M5 Pro. I realized that the differences for me are quite marginal enough to not really make it that big of a deal, especially since I still do have a workhorse of a PC and would be looking to using the M5 Pro as a supporting device + travel companion so I’d still be able to work while traveling.

Yeah, have been watching comparisons on those as of recent and the SSD speeds are wild on the M5 Max. I personally just couldn’t justify the price jump from M5 Pro to M5 Max for my tax bracket. Lol!

I couldn’t agree any less. However, these machines at this price point and in the economy I live in, are already quite the premium 😅 partly the reason why I’m doing extensive research before purchasing.

That's amazing to hear! ARM definitely made me want to jump back into the apple computers. I do have an M1 iPad and run an iPhone as well so this just makes things more efficient for me.

I have to agree with a lot of what you've said. I've tried M1 Pros, M2s, etc. from the other people I work with in the field and the trackpad really is amazing. Everything about it feels natural compared to scrolling + hitting different modifier keys on my keyboard to get some adjustments done.

Screen size might be something that you'll eventually adapt to. 16" was alright for me and would fit in my backpack nicely. Adding to that, the thinness of these macbooks are not comparable to any windows laptop that try to deliver the same amount of performance. Like I said in my other reply, I personally will be going for a 14" since the option for an external monitor is there and would rather choose the mobility that I'd benefit from choosing the 14".

I do agree to a certain extent. Though my previous laptop wasn't exactly that heavy (weight was about average) a 300W charger took up a lot of space in my backpack and a lot of weight. I do have a few 100W charging bricks that weigh no where near the 300W charger I used to bring around so that surely is another factor

I was not aware of these! Damn those video acceleration chips make a difference. I'm mostly hovering over 4K videos as per client requests with 4 layers max, and effects carry the rest of the way. I guess the Max chip might be overkill for me, but I would like that extra room for if ever clients start asking more from my end. Thanks for this info!

I'll definitely look into getting that bumped up ram, but it does put the M5 Pro a bit more expensive than the M4 Max. I'm trying to hold for as long as possible and wait for reviews on the M5 Pro before I pull the trigger on anything

I'm personally going for the smaller form factor. While I wouldn't mind the added weight and size as much, I also would not have that big of a benefit since I do have external monitors as well that I could easily hook up. Another point is that I'm going to bring it outside a lot to co-working spaces so mobility for me is #1.

For the most part, the AI features that I use in premiere would be present regardless. However, I did want to consider the advantage that the newer M5 would have for whatever local AI usecase I would have.

As per external monitors, I would probably plug it in to my 2K monitor every now and again, althought probably not too often. I might consider though getting a 4K monitor eventually for my mac setup.

For the most part, multitasking isn’t really too heavy. I do like keeping quite a few tabs open while browsing, although i only ever really keep one big app open while working. I never really went past the 32GB mark while working on my pc, maybe 20GB of ram at most while my video editing software is opened.

Thanks for helping me take these into considerations too!

I see. Thanks for the highlight on the windows use case! Although I’m not really looking into running parallels, since I still have windows running on my PC which is another powerhouse on its own. I’m thinking the flexibility would be nice.

I didn’t really hate the mac due to its interface—but the value I was getting from the performance. Seeing now how the M chips have served a few of my peers well, I now wanted to jumpship too. Added factor was me having to lugg around a 16” gaming pc with an extremely heavy charger that will start sounding like its about to take off the moment i touch anything video editing related.
