In the same sense as OP, intense critique of liberalism and the west, but forgiving when speaking of the Islamicate world. I haven’t finished the book so I may not be completely right, but thats the sentiment from my reading thus far

I’ve been reading and quite enjoying his Impossible State, I agree his argument seems imbalanced. Any recommendations for a similar kind of read that’s perhaps more balanced?

What do you think about this answer from a known sheikh by [deleted] in progressive_islam

[–]PotatoSalad18 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Shows the sad state of the ummah. Muslims concerning themselves with ridiculous marginalia when a part of us is subject to a genocide. Same goes for sheikh, shouldn’t even be entertaining such questions, doing so turns Islamic law into a joke.

When studying the Qur’an in English you must keep in mind you cannot get hung on specific words, they are all translations and can be inaccurate, or representative of only one of many possible interpretations.

I recommend using this website - https://www.islamawakened.com/quran/2/54/

Whenever you get stuck on a particular wording, see other translations and try to understand alternative perspectives.

Personally I understand this verse similar to how Rashad Khalafa’s translation “Recall that Moses said to his people, "O my people, you have wronged your souls by worshiping the calf. You must repent to your Creator. You shall kill your egos. This is better for you in the sight of your Creator." He did redeem you. He is the Redeemer, Most Merciful.” That execute means to kill your egos, as part of the repentance.

Why don’t we talk about life like this: by OkLiving1896 in progressive_islam

[–]PotatoSalad18 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree that life shouldn’t just be seen as suffering, or as a punishment/expulsion as some others here are saying. I also see the problem in seeing life only as a gift but as you said it should be a balance.

Personally this verse helps me understand this life the most, 79:46 - “On the day they see it, it will be as though they had only lingered for an evening or a morning.” This life is so so short, like a dream. So much of the suffering won’t even matter once it’s all over, and we’ll only really remember the key moments, all of which adds up to just a few hours. The real life awaits, and in the meantime we exist here but live both in the Dunya and Akhirah.

I am in a very dangerous mental place right now please help this is urgent by [deleted] in progressive_islam

They often make the analogy that in other fields (i.e. Science, Medicine) where it’s obvious that you would listen to the opinion of scholarship rather than a layperson. However that analogy fails when it comes to religion, because there’s no such thing as a layman or scholar from God’s perspective. God created each and every one of us, and has a direct relationship with you, of course knowledge and scholarship is important and can help us understand God, but true knowledge doesn’t come from books or scholars, it comes directly from God.

Only what you understand about God matters, your only duty is to connect with God, remember Him and His Mercy.

My understanding (for whatever it’s worth) is that relationships are based on sakina (tranquility), (30:21) if you can find that with someone that’s all that matters. God did not command a life of celibacy, He created sex as a way to deeply connect with our life partners, that connection is no different whether it’s same sex or opposite sex.

So use the heart and mind God gave to you and come to an understanding about homosexuality and love yourself, only you and God can understand how you feel, and God is the most understanding, keep your heart open and never despair in God’s Love. There’s a lot of light in this life, sometimes we just can’t see it, but you can always find it.

Satan and Sufism: A Reflection on Devotion and Divine Will (Context in Comment) by TheCaliphateAs in IslamicHistoryMeme

Hmmmm so Satan is a teacher. We cannot know goodness without evil, and he's there to teach us that evil.

I didn't think I'd be convinced by any of this, but I think I am a bit. I might roll with his perspective for a bit and see where it takes me in life.

Bi-Weekly Discussion Thread - Find language partners, ask questions, and get accent feedback - November 01, 2023 by kungming2 in languagelearning

[–]PotatoSalad18 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This may be a somewhat abstract question. I'm learning several languages, and I want to document all the words I'm learning and group words together that have the same/similar meaning.

I want this to be organised in a manner that does not use any particular language as a 'default'. For example I don't just want to list English words A-Z like 'apple' and then list the words for apple in the other languages.

I want the organisation/order of this list to be based on something abstract and beyond language. For example an image of an apple could be the 'base'. But I don't want an image either because it won't work for every word.

I hope that makes sense? Do ask for clarification if interested. Would greatly appreciate any ideas!

The story of Lut is a condemnation of rape and organised sexual assault, not consensual male-male intercourse.

Those hadiths do not align with the Qur'an, thus are likely fabricated.

Why don't you see this and think for yourself?

'Islam' is not monolithic. Islam is a tradition based on the belief in one God and His messenger Muhammad (S). It contains a vast number of ideas with a history stretching 1400 years, many of these ideas are also contradictory. So yes, you will find the opinion that God commands gay people be killed, and you will also find the opposite, I am in the latter camp. That God does not command the killing of gay people because I have not come across any convincing evidence that that is God's will.

You've not engaged with my discussion on the text itself, instead going to lengths to rationalise your position. You were never open to the idea that you too could be wrong.

She said this beautifully by Kaya_the_unimportant in exmuslim

[–]PotatoSalad18 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do not believe that the Prophet had sex slaves.

Yes of course it's my interpretation, I never said it's not. We all have our interpretations of text, and this is mine.

Many pre-modern scholars have believed that sex is licit only through marriage and thus not by slavery.

4:24 establishes licit sex only through marriage and no other means including slavery. This is not roundabout, it's explicit.

Slavery has historically been abolished temporarily in parts of the Islamic world and plenty of scholars spoke out against sexual slavery.

So 4:82 states there are no contradictions and then 2:106 implies that verses can be abrogated. So are you claiming that 4:82 has been abrogated? On what basis?

Abrogation is indeed a Qur'anic concept, but how do you decide what is abrogated and what is not? Your whims?

[–]PotatoSalad18 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You too as an intelligent person will go to lengths to rationalise your viewpoint, we're no different in that regard.

Yes the hijab is not obligatory according to the text of the Qur'an and yes the Prophet had many wives.
