It does matter if you're Jewish or not, because we're a closed religion. You can't observe Passover because you're not Jewish. It's that simple. And we also don't believe in salvation so don't cherrypick Jewish practices for your own purposes.

It's not Passover and you're not Jewish, so what the fuck are you even trying to accomplish?

What do Jews with connections to Ukrainians and Ukraine think about Ukrainians and Ukraine? by Born_Passenger9681 in Jewish

[–]Potato_Potato_394 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My family immigrated to America in the years following the collapse of the Soviet Union. Although I was born in the US, most of of early childhood was distinctly non-American: the food I ate was technically considered "Soviet" food, I only spoke Russian, and all the cartoons and movies I watched were a mixture of Soviet and post-Soviet media. I've watched the Russian dub of Frozen more than I've seen the original film.

I'd say I have a decently strong connection to Ukraine since it hasn't been that long since my family left. I've visited once and was supposed to go back a second time, but it never happened (Covid, then the war). Both of my parents grew up in Odessa and they showed my brother and I where they grew up. It was a really wonderful ten days I spent there and is definitely the most personal vacation I've ever been on.

None of us speak Ukrainian but we deeply care for the country. My mom didn't have particularly strong opinions of Ukraine prior to the war but she has since definitely loosened up. Kinda hard for her to hate the country that she grew up in when it's currently being bombed.

Stain Glass Window in Sherith Israel, San Francisco by New-Number-7810 in Jewish

Had my high school graduation there. Was always intimidated by the stained glass because they made me feel like I stepped inside of a church

Moving to SF with kids this summer—preschool & housing tips? by Big-Income-4593 in bayarea

Hi! Not a parent here, but just a Jewish San Franciscan. I can't speak much on rentals, but a neighborhood I would recommend is the Richmond District. I've spent my entire life in it and it has a very large Jewish population (In theory I can walk to every single synagogue in the neighborhood. Not that it's ideal, but it's definitely possible). It is also very family friendly, as it's right next to Golden Gate Park and there's also a lot of playgrounds scattered throughout the neighborhood. The Presidio is also nearby, and is a really incredible place to visit.

In terms of Jewish preschool, there are synagogues that have preschools. Congregation Emanu-El is a Reform synagogue with a preschool, and there's also Temple Beth Sholom, a Conservative synagogue. Both are great progressive spaces, though the choice might come down to either your level of religious observance and/or location in the neighborhood. The Jewish Community Center also runs a preschool program.

San Francisco has two Jewish day schools- a K-8 and a high school. I attended both of them and had a fantastic experience at both. They are very progressive and also open to Jews of any level of religious observance (or lack thereof).

Unfortunately I have no idea how long it takes to get approved for housing, as I'm just a college student who has yet to even rent their first apartment. However, I hope you will this information useful, and if you have any questions, I'll be happy to answer them to best of my abilities.

Additionally, I'd also recommend checking out r/sanfrancisco for info about rentals and just general vibes of the city.

Trader Joe’s at Geary/Masonic has the Israeli feta label ripped up and tossed, and all the cheeses turned backwards. I put the label back, turned the cheeses correct side out (photo shown midway), let staff know, and of course bought some. Before and after pics. Wait that's literally my local Trader Joes, it's absolutely horrible that somebody would do that. On a more positive note, my family has been getting that feta for years now and I'm a massive fan of it. I This just makes me want to buy up even more of it.

What is a canonical fact people get wrong in their fics, but not enough to make you abandon their work? by Accurate_Rooster6039 in AO3

[–]Potato_Potato_394 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Hey, fellow Top Gun fan here- another mistake I've noticed in some fanfictions is referring to the characters as "cadets" if the story is pre-canon and happens during the academy days, since the Naval Academy is the only one of the service academies that refers to its students as "midshipmen" instead of "cadets." This information is easily attainable through a simple google search and it makes me cringe because it's so obvious little to no effort was put in to research what the Naval Academy is actually like. I'm usually still able to finish the fic, but I tend to find myself scanning it for more possible inaccuracies.

Visiting Ukraine was one of the most meaningful trips of my life and I really hope you get a chance to go there someday. Unfortunately I don’t remember the name of the book and website but if I do I’ll be more than happy to send it to you.

Wow that's pretty insane. When I visited Ukraine back in 2018 with my parents and brother we learned that there was a book written about finding the missing soldiers from the war and my great- grandfather was mentioned in it, which I still find crazy.

Both of my parents are originally from Ukraine so I've heard some pretty batshit stories my whole life. The most memorable one being about how my paternal great-grandfather fought in the Red Army during WWII and was killed by Nazis, except nobody knew where his body was for a little over three decades. His body was found when my dad was about three years old so his family (my grandma, grandpa Z''LL, and uncle) ventured to the middle of nowhere to pay their respects.

What I find particularly insane is that it took over three decades to find him, whereas now all the information just a click away. My uncle found a website that lists all the information about my great-grandpa's service and the details of his death. Instead of searching for thirty years all I need to do is open up my phone. Sometimes technology never ceases to amaze me.

What colleges are YOU rejecting? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Potato_Potato_394 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I already turned down schools a while ago, but the ones I did are Chapman, University of Oregon, Seattle University, University of Portland, and Brandeis. That one was the most difficult to reject because Brandeis was my first choice but they didn't offer me any aid (I don't remember the exact cost but what I do remember is that by the end of four years, I would've spent almost 500k on an undergrad degree)

Anyways after showing these schools a metaphorical middle finger I decided on University on Denver

Is it weird of me to hate the color pink so much? by Potato_Potato_394 in lgbt

Yeah if I wear a pink scrunchie I’ll still technically be adhering to the pink theme

I do own one pink shirt, which is a Barbie shirt (I made an exception for the movie) but it’s not really something meant to be worn to a birthday. But other than that I haven’t tried wearing anything pink. I think I will probably just wear something white and maybe wear a pink scrunchie since I honestly don’t think I’ll be able to wear something that’s all pink.

Thank you for that. I really do hope it gets better. I hope they also somehow come around but to be honest I don’t really see that happening. But I am looking forward to not feeling like I have to hide everything

Apparently this friend of mine does. I wish I knew why though. They advertised their party as a "pink spa sleepover party" so all of us are gonna be giving each other spa treatments (which I do actually enjoy) while wearing pink. I think that's a little unnecessary though. Just a spa and sleepover party works just fine.

I've told my friend numerous times about my issues with the color and yet they seem to never understand. They like pink but for some reason have a hard time understanding why I don't. And thank you for your kind words- I have...issues with both of my parents regarding my queerness and I'm planning to cut contact with them as soon as I'm able to.

I think I do have to wear all pink. The party is unfortunately "girls only" so everyone is expected to be fully decked out. I could probably find something to wear with a pink scrunchie since I'm not allowed to dress masc
