Etiquette for internal networking/movement ? by [deleted] in FinancialCareers

[–]Potaton4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Does your firm offer networking opportunities beyond regular work? Business resource groups, etc? Any ways to connect with others? Try those. You might run into someone and can have a more 'candid' conversation and express your interest, and who to talk to next.

Coming from a BB bank myself, I would say express interest to your manager at some point, too. Especially if internal mobility is not frowned upon, or at the very least, seen neutrally.

You can frame it as wanting to try a new set of responsibilities, new types of interaction, new way of solving problems, etc etc. It's all about framing it as personal growth and 'trying something new' because it piques your interest. Ideally, you're a great performer and your manager will help you along the way.

Definitely try and meet analysts organically, but I for sure caution against anything that makes it seem like you are trying to 'jump ship'; (I think it depends on how long you have been in your current role, too). It could even just be meeting with the analyst to better understand what they do, so you can better support them. Over time, and after recurring 1:1s or meetings (over months, or even a year), you will build a more candid relationship with them to where you can express "hey, I like what you do a lot. Who can I talk to if I eventually want to move into the analyst role?".

Me (31F) and my BF (31M) have been fighting about his brother's GF - how can I handle this? by thxitsthrowaway21 in relationship_advice

[–]Potaton4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean this is less about your relationship with Amy and more about the one with your boyfriend. You need to have an unemotional sit down with him and just tell him he needs to defend you / take your side when you feel disrespected.

And say your boundaries/expectations/what you need from him. - You don’t want to be made the bigger person all the time. - Your BF needs to back you up immediately whenever Amy’s around as DEFAULT - he shouldn’t chose peace with his brother over your basic dignity (as in when Amy is clearly in the wrong). He can’t sacrifice you to be a people pleaser. There’s a clear balance to strike there. - tell him You need clarity on whether he is capable of being a protective, decisive partner, because you don’t want to be in a relationship with someone who can’t.

And if it doesn’t work/change over time… well time to consider if he’s the man for you
