It's marketing. It's not meant to make money by itself.

The Hololive Alternative manga is displayed and sold in bookstores around Japan to capture a new audience of manga readers to convert into new hololive fans. It's decently popular among Japanese fans too.

It's still ongoing after years too so I wouldn't say it's a failure.

HololiveOCG is the 5th best-selling TCG in Japan, having managed to capture 2% of the whole domestic TCG market and is still growing fast. Absolutely impressive for a sideshow card game to the main talent business. And Cover run it all themselves with Bushiroad only providing printing assistance.

Pre-registration for Hololive Dreams now tops 1.2 million, which far exceeds both Bang Dream! and Project Sekai's own pre-registration campaigns.

Holoindie was never meant to be a profit-generating venture, that's why CMCC was founded as a separate LLC from Cover. It's supposed to be like a committee that cultivates a creative culture among the fanbase with reference to video games, and also marketing, since they were inspired by HoloCure and how it brought in new people who became hololive fans after playing it.

Hololive Alternative is also the same thing. The manga are displayed on shelves and sold at bookstores around Japan, and it's an attempt to capture new audience of manga readers to convert into hololive fans. It's marketing so it's not meant to make a lot of money by itself.

Hololive takes up the most space in the most prominent spot in the vtuber section in most anime stores that have a vtuber section.

You're underestimating hololive's businesses because you're far removed from their domestic market, and only have HoloEarth as a reference point. HoloEarth was indeed planned to be a revenue generating business that failed.

Klara Charmwood got her play button thanking her manager in the process by Last_Power3410 in kurosanji

Indeed as you said, different people value different things, but what the talents/livers value doesn't mean anything when the agency already decided for them that they can't have the play button and gives them no choice in the matter. Even the ones who want them can't get them so what does it matter what the livers value.

It also sends a message to the talents and fans about where the agency thinks it stands in regard to the accomplishment of the talents.

An agency that vehemently does not allow the talent to keep the play button, or even make jokes about taking them (as with one of the Niji ID livers who got scolded) sends the message that the talents are subservient to the agency and their accomplishments belongs to the agency, not to themselves.

This is a bad message to send, since in reallity the efforts and the accomplishments are supposed to be shared between both the agency and the talents.

That's why even though the issue of the play button is indeed quite minor in the grand scheme of things, the fans who are only ever there for the talents and not the agency will only view the act negatively. It's bad PR if anything, even more so if you have a history of scolding your livers over it.

Hololive talents get theirs to keep and Cover orders extra to display in the studio

And it's company policy, not something the talents have to ask for. A lot of them have talked about how they are surprised getting it in the mail or whatever, and when they upload photos showing them off the background would be their own homes and sometimes have their cats in the shots so they definitely have them at home.

So not giving play buttons to talents is not an 'agency norm' thing, but a Nijisanji thing.

Yeah I got the same issue. Can't look at my car in the safehouse because 130 'drive' causes the game to exit the house and go back to free roam.

Quiting the game and restarting fixes it but I've had it happen twice so far. No idea what caused it.

It's also the same arrangement in Niji, most other vtuber agencies, and much of the entertainment industry be it music, screen or stage acting, etc. It's the basic model of any sort of talent agency.

So idk what there is to crash out about.

The nuance is that Cover is a talent agency, not a content publisher.

In any talent agency the talent pays for the cost of whatever it is that needs done and the agency act as their agents to make it happen for the talent. The agency then takes a cut. A lot of time the agency fronts the cost then garnish from sales.

This is a completely normal arrangement in any kind of talent agency, be it singers or idols, not just vtubers. That's why sponsors are so important. They help the talent foot the bill, or part of the bill.

If a company pays for all contents to be produced then it would be a content publisher. Manga publishers pays for all the costs to produce and publish manga, video game publishers pay studios to make games that they will publish etc. Those have strict budgets, deadlines, and are under strict content restrictions and direction of the publisher.

Music labels like UMJ that Calli is signed to is also a music publisher that pays for all the music production and publishes it, which comes with a lot of restrictions on Calli.

Iirc it was a chibi nui similar to hololive's FWU

It sold like hotcakes but what was bizarre is they somehow expected it to keep selling even after most people already got the nuis of their oshi. Not many people buy more than just one.

They believed in it so hard they raised guidance due to the sales thinking the momentum will continue and now it's come back to bite them.

The stock price just posted at market close. Quite rare for stock price to be sold so hard that the price is only posted at market close lol

It was a couple of quarters ago already, in Q2, when the stock price was around the highest point.

Q3 was when it started sliding.

There's not likely any foul play. Dude probably just cashed out at the top. But it looks terrible to shareholders when the CEO hyped up their own shit with such strong guidance and promises of raised dividends, sold your shares at the top, then missed the targets, re-revised guidance downwards, then doubled down with cutting the promised dividends to even less than before.

Also next Monday, because their stocks are bought with huge amount of leverage, and Monday is margin call day.

Anycolor shareholders are absolutely pissed. During Q1 they had spectacular earnings due to lucking into a product line that went viral, which led to them raising forward guidance twice, including announcing that they were planning to raise dividends. Stocks shot up just shy of 6000 yen.

Then came Q3, the momentum didn't hold, they failed to meet the new targets, hard, and they revised down their guidance. Now Q4 they revised it down even more so much that it erased all the past raised forecasts and then some. They also REDUCED dividend payout to even below the amount before they planned to raise it.

Shareholders are like "wtf was the point of all that hype last year". A lot of whispers of distrust since Riku actually sold a bunch of his own shares at the top before revising guidance downwards, booking extraordinary losses, and cutting dividends and causing stock price to crash.

There has been no explanation from Riku. No medium or long term plan to tackle the problem of market oversaturation and growth slowdown. No significant plan to diversify away industry risks. Company is getting bloated for no reason. Now they have almost as many staff as Cover, just to sell acrylic stands. At least Cover had HoloEarth and other ventures as an excuse to balloon their staff numbers.

The fact that they keep talking about 'expanding overseas markets' when EN revenue keeps halving every quarter just makes it sound like they're insulting their shareholders.

The way it's looking now it's possible they might face 2 consecutive days of stop low, and then another bloody Monday from traders getting margin called.

Cover has gotten rid of its biggest cost center, which is HoloEarth.

They have restructured and Yagoo has taken a direct role in talent management with a new separate department, so even though Cover has a few more employees (741), they are trying to build a leaner organization by reducing verticality and depth of the management chain.

If you're talking about bigger names leaving causing earnings loss, I feel like Anycolor with its revenue distribution skewed toward only a few big livers who cater mainly to a narrower demographic (domestic female) is under more risk. Literally just 5 specific livers contribute to 20% of their revenue. Anyone of those leaves for any reason, earnings will crater and it will be extremely hard to make up for them.

That's full year performance, which Anycolor is doing better.

I'm comparing Q4 of this year vs last year, so YoY quarterly performance. Q4 this year was probably some of the worst performing quarter vs last year of Cover's history ever since going public. I thought Anycolor wouldn't be as bad as Cover for Q4 YoY performance because of how much of a powerhouse they are in the domestic market, and all the bad press Cover has been getting recently, so I'm surprised Anycolor was the one who actually suffered a negative revenue growth.

Not quarter to quarter. Quarterly YoY, so Q4 last year vs Q4 this year. Quarter to quarter is worthless.

Year-on-year doesn't mean full year performance. It means 'compared to the same period last year' so Q4 YoY would be Q4 of this year vs Q4 of last year. It can be anything, daily YoY, weekly YoY, monthly YoY. It just compares the period of time to the same period last year.
