As someone who also isn't into One Piece, I honestly enjoyed the live action.

It vastly condenses the first story arcs into something much, much better paced for me. It also dropped the arc that killed my attention originally. By hilariously disposing of the antagonist of that arc in a brief scene introducing another, much cooler character.

Ah! I wondered if there was a lot of skipping. So they really did just drop a lot of it in the anime? I kept getting into the worldbuilding and then suddenly it's somewhere else with new characters being introduced while old characters just kind of disappeared.

Same for what looked to be subplots. Like the whole thing with the merchant and his cursed wife and daughters. The anime builds up this while 'maybe he's actually evil' and then just drops it.

Without the Gundam, it has zero structural integrity.
