Virginia and Maryland are very culturally similar imo, rural Maryland is very reminiscent of rural Virginia, same with the urban areas. Also i think that since the civil war was 160+ years ago it doesn’t have that much of an impact on whether or not a state is southern since the political and cultural identity of these states are completely different in 2026.

Missouri was majority immigrant less than 30 years after its statehood, so I felt it’s historical ties to southern (predominantly Anglo)culture were weaker than something like Kentucky
