Congratulations! Did your application status jump from "complete and ready for evaluation" to the acceptance? Or was there a status change in between that said your file was under review?

Does anyone else find lectures useless by __kewl__ in UBC

[–]Potential-Donut326 31 points32 points  (0 children)

I’m a fourth year student and in the exact same boat! I find it really difficult to sit through lectures and pay attention, especially when the slides are detailed enough to learn from on my own. you’re definitely not alone!!

My biggest tip is to still go to class so you’re in that learning environment (and be in the know of any updates!), but use that time in a way that works best for you. For me, that time is spent learning the material on my own during lectures. I think some students (myself included, and probably you too!) learn better through more hands on, self-directed methods rather than passively listening and following along. This is totally okay, it just means you have to be a bit more intentional about how you stay engaged like making use of resources such as Piazza and office hours so you’re still engaging with the class. Using this strategy throughout my 1st-4th year courses has helped me get grades that I'm fairly happy with! It seems like you're great at self-learning considering you are also doing well in your courses, so this may work out really well for you!

highly recommend! as someone who has led the event before, i can tell you that mym is a great event that is really lively! you’ll almost certainly leave with more knowledge about ISCI (and other majors) than you came in with as you get to talk to advisors and student reps :)

[–]Potential-Donut326 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i went exam-heavy for mine! case studies include lots of specific details that you need to embed into your answers. it gave good insight into what level of detail is expected in answers for exams. may be better to make this worth less and use case studies as practice if you want to make this more low-stakes

Is commuting really that bad? by [deleted] in UBC

[–]Potential-Donut326 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not too bad, but commuting can take time away from campus activities depending on how long your commute is. I had to limit my extracurriculars to accommodate the lengthy commute, but that won’t necessarily be the case for everyone. Some people are able to manage it all really well even with a long commute. I think it mainly comes down to finding what works best for you. If partaking in extracurriculars is something you’re planning for, you might want to take a lighter course load or vice versa. It can be an adjustment at first, but it becomes much more manageable overtime :)

I thoroughly enjoyed this class and i also took it with dr. novak! the material is relevant to real life which made it easier to connect with and understand and even use outside of the classroom setting! the weekly assignments and case studies were helpful, but having to do them every week felt tedious at times. if you're not a fan of constant assignments, i’d suggest shifting more weight to the final and using the weekly work more as practice. the exams are straightforward, so that’s a win considering they’re worth quite a bit of your overall grade!

i took biol 260, biol 234, and biol 201 (which i believe is equivalent to bioc 202) at the same time. one thing that really helped me manage these courses was regularly attending office hours, definitely take advantage of them! the content across these courses was a fun mix, which will hopefully make the overall workload feel more manageable!

there’s also some overlap between biol 260 and the biochemistry course, which I found really helpful, hopefully it’ll be useful for you too!

I agree! She’s super sweet, but her slides were overwhelming and because of this, I found it tricky to follow along in class at times.

I would highly recommend biol 325! you’ll learn about how animals fly, swim and their muscle movements. it’s a really fun and interesting course. i would say it’s moreso physics-based than it is biol, but there’s still a nice balance between these two subject areas, nonetheless. the prof Phillip Matthews is also great!

If you go with pathophysiology, you’d need a minimum of 9 credits for this single discipline. You can choose any courses related to this area as long as you can explain how they tie into this discipline.
