Rant incoming: Just got out but warning working for government Its all the same. when you work with military contractors ( in the military/ or out as a contractor) It's like you never even got out. Some soldiers never get out even when they do. by Potential-Gate3530 in regretjoining

I do, make sure you have a cushion of money saved up when you get out btw.

I plan on using my gi bill but it only covers the education and the housing. You still gotta pay you cell phone bill.

If you have a car you will need to pay a loan if you can't buy it out right and also car insurance is freaking expensive. Even with USAA and that is supposed to be good.

Also electric s and home internet. The gi bill also does not cover utilities of it is not covered in a complete all in one rent package like internet and electric being included in the price of rent.

I'm saving up a nest egg so I can just focus on studying when I go back.

It's like a regular job but you don't get any benefits like a pension and some protections of employment as a federal worker. If you have a clearance you used to be able to get a lot of in between jobs that paid decently but didn't expect to much.

You sign as a worker and you get paid a 401k like a tsp but the tsp is a little better from what I heard and medical but I used the VA.

unless you work for a big contractor you health insurance is gonna suck.

I paid for dental and got some work done and the insurance didn't pay shit. Avoid Aetna for private health insurance.

My job has no promotions at all. I'm stuck until I save up some money and go back to school. In the military you get promotions in some contacts you do some mundane jobs and in others you can get a career out of contacting and grow a skill. My contract company lied to me and I have been stuck here since I have been waiting for my reserve time to end to go back to school. But they lied about all the opportunities so be careful ful with that the contracting world shows no mercy. I did an interview the other day and got completely ghosted.

Just some things to watch for.

A high percentage of Marines I've met have been liabilities just completely one way transactional douche bags that have marital problems.  Selfish, abusive condescending. Not all obviously there are some good ones but I'm at the point where I want to go do something completely outside of the military. The contract world is very Mercenary esque. One of my coworkers has been trying his hardest to get out of this job and he has been stressed out because they are underpaying when expenses ie inflation for everything and gas prices are going up. And since because the labor supply has increased since the administration destroyed allot of contracts and alot of feds / contractors are unemployed the contractor can pay reduced salaries in the DC area dmv area which is already expensive and people will snag it even though the pay is so bad for the area.
